Rikaelus wrote:So you seriously think that it's signing a piece of paper called a "Marriage License" that has people up in arms about gay marriage "violating the sanctity of marriage"? No, it's allowing people to sign this governmental paper while living a life that violates religious beliefs. You and I may see that marriage is more a governmental ceremony and recognition than religious, but the religious-right sure don't. Rikaelus wrote:And as far as "honor or prestige" goes... since when does the government have anything to do with that? The government started having something to do with honour and prestige the moment they gave us tax breaks for marriage. So, basically, 1776 or so. Rikaelus wrote:If honor and prestige is contingent on a certain combination of two words alone, then that's pretty shallow, don't you think? Welcome to America. Welcome to the crux of this entire argument. It's fucking silly. silverwasp wrote:Be careful what you wish for... I have 10 younger siblings and I am only 20....

I'm quite certain that the religious-right's real problem is with people living a life that violates their beliefs. But that alone they can't do anything about, so they're attacking the next best thing: the piece of paper that represents it. My point stands, though, that their issue isn't with the piece of paper - it's with the lifestyle.

I think they do not like the lifestyle, but would be MORE than willing to let them have exactly the same thing, but call it civil unions or ANYTHING but marriage. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

I think they do not like the lifestyle, but would be MORE than willing to let them have exactly the same thing, but call it civil unions or ANYTHING but marriage. First google result claims otherwise. Quote:On civil unions there's a larger gender gap: While 57 percent of men oppose same-sex civil unions, that declines to 45 percent of women. Support for civil unions peaks among younger people, college graduates, people living in the East and West, Democrats and liberals; opposition jumps among seniors, Southerners, Republicans, conservatives and evangelical white Protestants.
Views on civil unions and same-sex marriages largely coincide. However, 14 percent of people who oppose gay marriage do support allowing same-sex couples to form civil unions.
Admittedly I don't really know the difference between Evangelical and not but taking the connotation I get from hearing the blathering of people in Seattle and the liberally biased media I will assume that evangelical indirectly means closer to "Religious Right". so in an ideal situation 81%-14%=67%>49%
God damnit the table didn't copy over too well. Oh well click the link.

Evangelicals are the new bat-shit crazy Christians who hate everyone, blame the devil for everything and have secret homosexual relationships which lead to such things as anti-gay camps. TripleBam wrote:I was about to correct something but....no...it's all there.
