I'm about as miserable as I've ever been in my life right now. How many of you can say you're actually happy?

I've got a lot of things to be happy about and some things to be unhappy about. At the end of the day it really comes down to whether or not you generally have an optimistic or pessimistic attitude. I'm usually optimistic, but to say I'm happy would be a huge sweeping statement. Most people probably go through a wide range of emotions in one day, unless they've gone through some tragedy or something great has happened to them. So the most accurate answer would be that I've gone through a range of emotions today, most things that have happened to me were either positive or neutral, and nothing extraordinary has recently happened to me, although I remain optimistic. I remember you saying in another post that something bad has happened to you. Care to share it with the forum? You may have your own section for people to ask for your advice but maybe it's time for the tables to turn? I'd offer to smoke you out.. but I'm broke as fuck currently.

Happiness is what you make it. I would say I am content with bouts of happiness. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

I am pretty much happy but it is more that I have a peace because I know Who is in control.

I am mostly happy these days, but it wasn't very long ago that I was also about as miserable as I'd ever been. It's very fresh in my mind and I know that I could wind up back in that same situation fairly easily even still. Ironically, it's the knowledge/paranoia/fear of winding up there again which I think is one of the things holding me back from being more than just mostly happy. Anyways, you're a cool guy and you deserve to be happy - if there's ever anything I can do to help out let me know. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

Long of the short is that I've made some decisions recently that have impacted my life negatively. I've lost someone who really meant something to me, and I'm in a really shitty place both in career and living. The house is badass, but it's the circumstances that are ruining it.

Try laying off the booze for a while. Yeah sounds lame but I come from a family of alcoholics.. drinking usually just makes everything worse. Think about it.

If it helps... WDF? wrote:"I am stuck in the blood pressure machine down at the Food Giant. " I lol'd. For like 2 minutes. Some of us are within driving distance or shakey bus-ride of you. If you want some company around ( as often helps to regain positive perspective ), some of us can be physically there for you. If you can pick our cheap asses up. Or someone. I could take a bus. Fuck, it's cold outside. Safety + Peace

Went from a great-paying job to being voluntarily unemployed for six months to a job that pays shit. Went from a badass house which had 4 bathrooms to my new place: a 1 bdrm, .25 bath (it's not possible to bend over while in the shower to pick up the soap because it's so small), with a living room that is a partial illegal garage conversion attached to a house. Only the owner started asking questions of the City for something he wanted to do which tipped them off and now the city code enforcement officers want to come inspect the garage, so my livingroom wall has to come down in the next two weeks . . . Went from having a GF, to not having one. I'm still recovering from having to put down deposit and first month's rent on the place after depleting my bank account all those months so there will be not Xmas gifts - except for my donation to Whut to keep this place running and perhaps a little surprise care package to cheer Whut up. Now, if I can only find that blow-up sheep somewhere . . . ??? "Cantrip, it sounds like it all went to shit on you. What gives? How can u possibly be happy?" It all boils down to money. If I had more, I could cure a lot that's wrong. The job that I have now doesn't pay me anymore if I work more hours, but I'm really happy with what I do and they give me compensatory time instead. They also do not allow outside employment, however, I get up in the morning, go to work, blink, and the day is gone. In the meantime I've helped a dozen people who otherwise would have received no help at all. Same with the living situation - money could fix my problem (like getting a real apt.), but I've been happy living alone and the owner of the house offered me a space on the other side of the house, that is legal, that has a bigger footprint. GF - that was the real problem. I think she's great, but we were just together too long and partially as a result of that, she wanted to know what I did every single moment of the day. Now I'm left alone with my Palm Pilot. -Well, maybe it's not a better situation, but at least I don't have to answer to anyone and if I come home at 2 a.m., my palm doesn't yell at me. Outside of work: I have every spare moment filled with an activity that I could not do because of the time demands of my previous job. Never mind what the activity is. Let's just say that I can shut off my brain to thinking of my job, which I couldn't do before because I didn't have the outlet. I'm basically free, poorer and inconvenienced because of it, but free. Free at last, free at last. Lord almighty, free at last . . . You should be more like Cantrip. Twitchy: "I pulled a Cantrip . . ." GivePeaceAChance: "If the Tempest had nipples, I'd pinch that shit." Xylicon: "I'm about to deliver my [Richard] in your face for posting that stupid shit. " WDF?: "He keeps reaming me... night after night... I'm rather sore." GivePeaceAChance: "OMG MY NIPS ARE HARD" llenta: "cantrip, you fail!!!" Filliam H. Muffman: "i'm on top of dick"

I'm reasonably happy and useful most days. I look more for serenity as opposed to happiness. Happiness is dependent on circumstances and people outside of my control. Serenity is dependent on my spiritual condition which is in my control. I don't pray for what I want -- I do pray for the power to do what my Higher Power needs me to do today to be helpful to others.
People that are always happy are mentally ill -- it's called mania. Every day if I'm normal I get a chance to experience all the human emotions. Emotions don't bring me happiness and they are for the most part out of my control. The important thing is what I do each day; not what I feel. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells like ... victory"

I agree that happiness is a mindset that you yourself have a lot of control over. At no point in my life have I had every single thing going exactly as I'd like it to, but I also don't think I've ever been in a place where absolutely NOTHING is either. Sometimes it becomes a bit of a task to find a "silver lining", and frankly sometimes it's just not realistic to do it without feeling silly. You can't just ignore the bad things, but always keep in mind that timeless phrase: "This too shall pass." Fortunately, however, I can suggest a time of incredible happiness going on next month in Las Vegas that you should very much be considering, Whut! HolyJaw wrote:In the end, everything Endyss said.
