I got Left 4 Dead yesterday and there have been a lot of problems. Most of the time i have zero sound (except microphones) throughout the entire level. However, as of today i discovered that i have no problems on Death Toll (i think that's the name of it), but i always have problems on No Mercy (haven't actually played the other maps yet). I also get a lot of lag (probably due to my old video card). I have already reinstalled left4dead and that seemed to help some, but not much. I restarted my computer and that definitely helped, but it didn't last long.

Could it just be my video card? I have an NVidia GeForce 6200, 256MB DDR2. I know, i need an upgrade, but is this the problem to the sound?

Another problem i've had is that it constantly crashes with no error message. Before I restarted my computer, it crashed every hour on the hour. After i restarted it, it still crashes but not nearly as often. Again, could this be the video card or something else?

The GeForce 6200 doesn't fully support DirectX 9, which Left 4 Dead requires. I had the same random crash problem with the original Half-Life 2 when my machine had a 6200. I think the minimum's a 6600, but getting a better card like a 7800 with some Christmas cash will put you in the clear.

I'm stumped on the no sound bit. Sowwy.

If AGP go for something like a HD2600XT or X1900XT

If PCI-E go for a HD 4850, you MIGHT be able to find a GTX260 for ~$160 if you're lucky

I recommend something from the nvidia 8 series. Last year's badass cards. Which means it's hyper victory for less money.

3 times so far I've seen newegg with the MSI 260 for $180 after $40 rebate so another $20 drop in response to the recent 4870 drop didn't seem totally unreasonable. Regardless, you can find a HD4850 in your price range that will offer excellent performance.

I have a PCI express ati radeon X1900 XT (512 mb version )you can have. Just pay shipping. It runs L4D perfectly. I just upgraded my card and don't really have any use for it

In that case, get a GeForce 7800 or that other ATI card. Both will be well under $150.

While you're at it, add a gig or two of RAM.

Your computer sucks cock, Save up for a brand new one, Beacause all your components need updating. I have loads of components in my attic that have better specs than your PC (eg. 1GB DDR2 667Mhz & Radeon X1650Pro) , which I still haven't gotten around to selling and are decreasing in value.

hold on a wee bit maybe. the imminent release of the 295 will see the performance crown return to Nvidia. one can expect to see price drops across the board because of this. i reckon that 260 for $160 isn't too far away.
yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.
