I've recently moved back into my parents' house. It's much larger than my old apartment, which is to say, getting wireless reception from the downstairs living room when the router is on the opposite side of the house is like trying to make a snowball in hell.

I want to set up a wireless point-to-point network. I have two routers. Can I do this with my two commodity routers ( if so, a meager "how?" ), or will I have to shell out for the specialized hardware

depends on the hardware. google wrt54gl and it will lead you to the various options. I personally use tomato on a gl but have run ddwrt and hyperwrt on other hardware. the easier choice may be to buy a better antenna

What cheney's trying to say is that the Linksys line of routers (which hopefully you have) have a wonderful array of 3rd party firmware you can run that will make point to point wireless easier.

This is also known as "repeating." You can just buy a cheap linksys repeater if you want. Personally, I'd just plug a cable into an upstairs (or other-room) outlet and run two modems seperate from each other.

it's ok. all computer components have clearly dotted lines along which you can cut* to make smaller.
