Well, within the past few weeks I got a scholarship from the company I work for. I was just a cashier and a photo lab guy at an H.E.B. grocery store, but I applied for a marketing scholarship through my school and one of the sponsors happened to be my company. I was pretty certain I would get that specific scholarship simply because they would see on my resume that I work there and would probably make me stand out a lot. So, I got the scholarship.

The thing is, I just got a call today while I was in class from a recruiter from H.E.B. that wants to "touch base" with me regarding my future. I'm fairly certain they're trying to butter me up for an interview at some corporate or regional center with an entry level job. That would be pretty cool, I suppose, but I was actually planning on quitting the company this summer. It's not that I don't like the company itself, it's just that I can't stand the job I have at the grocery store. I'm not really sure if that's a fair criteria to go by considering what they may be talking to me about might have nothing to do with working in one of the retail stores. I also don't have that big of an interest with working in a grocery store chain, as I am more of an avid fan of technology and computers in general - I would rather work for a computer company or something similar.

So I guess I'm wondering... should I still quit? I'm not sure exactly how bad it might be for me when I actually try to go find a job on my own considering the economy. However, I just can't see myself working in H.E.B. as a career. I mean, I really have no interest in working there. I feel like I'm kinda losing either way though, and I hate to just turn away stuff like that, but I am not sure.

talk to the headhunter first, just get a feeling for whats going on. And obviously the scholarship is there to influence you to want to work for them. But consider this, my brother works for the marketing department at petsmart. This is not anywhere near like being a cashier at a store. Its an office, working on a computer, drafting up designs, etc etc. That the signs have pictures of animal crap on them is part of it, sure, but it's still exactly the sort of job a graphic designer gets a hard-on for.

And worse case, unless your pushing 50 and in a crunch for time, take the easy job as a shoe in. With the market the way it is, a job that has less competition for it will be of huge benefit to you and if your current resume has "cashier" on it, it will be harder to land your dream job than if your resume had "same exact fucking position at this other place where I ruled it."

I do realize that I won't be doing the same things, but it's more the industry itself I am not too fond of. I have a year of college left to go and I already have two internships under my belt for fairly big, growing companies, so resume building isn't something I must absolutely do right now, although it always helps.

I think I might just talk to them and let them know that I am still not certain with what I plan on doing considering I still have school left.

Don't mention the word "quit" or "leave."

Tell them other companies have provided opportunities for your growth in your respective area of education. Be vaguely specific. Ask Them what They can do for You.

If you're very serious about not needing them, then this trick shouldn't take much to pull off. If they're serious about wanting to keep you, they'll work hard for it. If they're not, you'll go your separate ways, and everyone will be better for it.

Use as many oxymorons as possible. :)

Seriously though,

Bike, don't burn any bridges in the interview. I like to keep my options open put the decision making in my own hands. I say this because as an interviewing manager for my own company ...at the first interview I don't get excited about applicants who 1. Tell me they had already planned on leaving. 2. That indicate that we are negotiating terms right now because they have x many opportunites available to them. It usually doesn't help you case because the employer cannot usually verify your claims and it appears stand-off ish. The first interview is about making sure the work, company culture, and job(s) available is a good fit for you both. Its informational. You can still make your decision to not take an offer...but first you have to RECEIVE the offer...

I personally would go to the interview and see what's on the plate. I would make the case for why I would be an asset to thier company, and answer any and all behavioral questions truthfully...Basically I would get the Job...then choose whether or not to not take it....

Thats how I have handled these things in my own past (i basically had the same thing happen to me with my employer who I worked at through college... )...and it has worked out for me so far.

So I called them and I talked to the headhunter. Apparently they want to promote me to one of eleven assisstant managers at the grocery store location I'm in once I graduate college. Training is not paid and my two diplomas will be utterly wasted. I'm quitting them.
