Indeed. What does it tell you about our country if it dedicates the shortest month of the year to the history of the largest but not (arguably) the most oppressed ethnic group?

Black history month has evolved into one of america's biggest bullshitfests. The original intention was.. fair.. to say the least, but the only reason people pay attention to it today is force of habit. Or, for many white people, a way to relieve guilt without actually doing any work. And the only reason it's prevalent is because there's enough black people in america to actually have a voice. What about native americans? If you're going to dedicate a month to the history of a historically oppressed ethnic group, surely you would include native americans? 90% of their original population had been wiped out, with the remaining displaced from their homelands and treated just as bad, if not worse, than blacks. Well, how many times do you see an indian walking around? Never. So fuck 'em.


If Barack Obama really cared about black people, or people in general, he would urge everyone to stop organizing black history month, and he would tell us to read black history, and native american history, and latino history, and asian history, and jewish history, and european history, and african history, and the history of the middle east, and the history of gay rights, and of atheism, and philosophy, and he would urge us to learn a second language, and to learn english literature, and to learn multicultural literature, and math, and science, and the arts all year long. But then everyone would call him an elitist and dismiss the idea.
