I try to play Half-Life: Source, the main menu begins to load (blurry image, "loading" in bottom-right corner), game quits to desktop, and I get this window...

This is strange. Because I have 2.5GB of memory, an 8600GT video card, and have played the game on this machine numerous times.

Restarted, reinstalled, restarted, googled, searched, troubleshot, and this thing still won't work.

Any ideas?

Check your pagefile. Any limits on it could be causing this.

I am also not entirely sure this is a HL:Source error message. Any chance you have a mod or add-on that could have thrown this error?

It's totally vanilla. This is happening straight after it finishes downloading from Steam.

Okay, I have a fix.

Assemble the following things:
1 BLack Pullet
1 lb. white cornmeal
2 oz. sea salt
1 dram of blood of a dead relative
1 machete
7 cigars (not philly blunts, those don't count)
A fifth of Mount Gay Rum

Let me know when you have those things, and we'll continue from there.

I had the exact same problem with TF2. After the 2nd day of it having crashed like this it magically started updating itself to which that error stopped completely. My guess is your game isn't updating properly.

Try this:

From Steam My Games List:

Right click -> properties -> local files tab -> Verify integrity of game cache...

Try hard-flushing your RAM. Sometimes the little 0's and 1's get stuck when you shutdown. Volatile memory my ass. Just stick it in the microwave for a good 5 or 6 seconds, and it'll reverse the polarity of the charge of any "stuck" sectors. Voila, problem solved.

Also try extending the size of your Virtual Memory. There's tutorials on how to do it on Steam support and on the internet.

Maybe it's if you own HL1 then? I don't know.. I never had to pay for it.
