I have been contemplating the idea of getting a GPS system. I recently was notified that a research papaer I submitted to my University's writing contest won a prize ($50-$100). Given that, I would really like a GPS system since I can get easily lost when going to new places.

Does anyone currently own a GPS system, and would recommend it? There are just so many different models and types I dont really know where to start. My price range is up to $200. All I want is to have it tell me where to go, and no extra stuff like traffic alerts and bluetooth (unless that comes in under $200).

Also, are there any hidden fees that I should be aware of, like monthly costs? I know I read that for some, to be able to update maps and whatnot, you need to pay a monthly fee. The GPS also needs to be of the portable type.

I really have no idea about these, but I came across this one at Best Buy.com (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?id=1218068797021&skuId=9252872&type=product). I havent looked around for the best price yet.

Thanks for any help.

(If this is in the wrong section, please move it).

EDIT: I also came across this one, and it looks pretty good for the price:

I don't know how much help it is but I have Garmin etrax summit HC. It is a pretty basic unit I use it primarily while hunting so I don't get too lost chasing the dogs. It does have a nice long battery life and is waterproof, although I would recommend carrying extra batteries as in cold weather even new batteries may not produce enough juice to turn on. This is a very basic unit, no turn-by-turn navigation, it will allow you to track your progress and you can add waypoints. It also comes with some software that you can mark points of interest. I imagine you could get on google earth and find your directions (GPS coords) and just set waypoints at your turns if you wanted this, however you would need to know where you were going beforehand. Overall I think garmin makes a pretty good product and would not hesitate to purchase any of there products.

One other thing, do be careful about some of the more advanced units that have traffic updates and such these extra features do require a service plan much like a cell phone.
