Well, I recently began to get plagued with bluescreens in any OS. I've troubleshooted for about a week to diagnose the culprit. I'm about 95% sure it's my motherboard.

Anyway, I'm looking for a good "barebones" kit from Tigerdirect that includes a good motherboard, CPU, and case. I want to upgrade and still transfer some of my working componets like my graphics card, and other things to cut down on cost.

PCI-E is a must, but I don't even think that many exist that don't have that anymore. I'm hoping to send no more than $400. Keep in mind that my last processor was a Pentium D 940, so I'm not looking for advanced and the latest hardware considering I wasn't anticipating an upgrade. Also, I've read a lot of debate between the Core 2 and the Quad processors by intel on which is better. Is there really a huge difference?

Here's some I'm currently looking at:

Any suggestions or tips?

Hmm. Don't skimp on the power supply whatever you do.

Are you salvaging any components from your old rig like the vid card?

If you looked for the individual components on Newegg it might be cheaper, especially if you choose some basic box for your rig.
You should be more like Cantrip.

What video card do you have? As long as its not too powerful, the power supply shouldnt be a problem. But when I built mine... I had bought a really bad quality psu.

I would go with the quad core. I have a Q6600 (which actually raised in price since I got it) overclocked to 3.0 (factory settings 2.4). I don't know much about the Q6700. The Q6700 was "deactivated" on Newegg, so I dont know what that means. Also, the quad core kit does not have a powersupply bundled with it, but I am guessing you had noticed that.

Does tigerdirect put tax on your sale or is it like newegg where it doesnt? I would check the components against newegg prices just to be sure as well.

Well, oddly enough, my sister also needs a new power supply for her computer. However, she doesn't use any hardcore graphics on hers, so I was going to give her whatever PSU that came with the bundle (if it did), and buy a good one for myself. Tje one that shipped with her PC was only 300W, so it shopuld be fine for her.

I'm using my 8800 GTS 640mb in the new computer. My reasoning behind a barebones kit is that if it's the motherboard on my old computer that's faulty, which it most likely is, I'm going to need a new one anyway - which means i'll most likely need a new case also, and since my old processor is crap (plus im a little worried about putting that old POS on my new motherboard since it could be partially damaged), I'll just get a good processor. I might as well get a package deal that includes those components (maybe a bit moreat a discount) since I know jack about matching hardware like processors to motherboards.

I'm going to be transferring my graphics, RAM (if I need to), PCI tv tuner, and the various input devices I use.

I'll also consider just writing down the parts that the bundle has and looking at them separately on newegg, since I at least know they'll be compatable. Good idea.

Go i7! It'll be worth it in the long run, even if it is $150 more.

I would, but I really can't afford to spend that much more. I'd love to invest in something like that, but for the amount of gaming I've done recently I don't really think I need that, even if it's only $150 more. Keep in mind though that what you have me was only the processor and motherboard, and I'll need to get a new PSU also which is even more.

"PCI tv tuner"

Did you have that tuner already installed before you started having problems? Have you done the diagnostics thing where you remove all components save for the mobo, processor and memory?

Yes, I've had it since I got the PC. I've also removed the excess components and the computer still shoots errors at me, so I know it's not those bits of hardware.

If anyone knows how to read mini dumps, I have a perfmon report along with all the minidumps I had in a single day with the errors.

Okay, just one more testing option before you spend the big bucks. Download a Puppy Linux Live CD image and burn it onto a CD with any free image burner software or load onto USB drive if your comp supports USB flash startup. Run that and if it doesn't like it, then it's your hardware.
