Also, I live in southern california, with the worlds highest per capita population of undocumented immigrants living and working around me. A good number of my friends in high school were hispanic. It's VERY hard not to pick up at least a semblance of the language.

THen there's the fact that I worked for two years in Santa Ana, the city that houses most of these undocumented immigrants and their families (and their legal brethren of course - not every mexican is illegal.) When 50% of your customers don't speak English, you pick up another language right quick.

Same here, I live in Kern County which has an official number of 60% hispanic, but if you count undocumented and migrant workers its probably closer to 70% hispanic. I work for a company that does IT for local businesses, and you'd think you wouldn't need spanish for that, but you're wrong. You pick it up pretty quickly when you have too. Especially if you combine it with 3 years in highschool.

You said in your first post that you dont think your spanish is very good. I can't imagine trying to troubleshoot a technical problem with a spanish speaking customer. I took 3 years in highschool, 20 credit hours in college, and lived in equador for a summer. That was years ago though and my fluency has drastically wasted away now. I can pretty much just read spanish now...not speak it.

I thought I could totally remember french even without speaking it often. Not true. I tried talking to a french girl and struggled to remember words and pronunciation. She says "Ah, vous apprendrez le francais?" (You're learning french?) I was heartbroken
