Yeah, joking about his car accident has been done to death and I think it was always done more for political reasons than humor, I can't think of ever laughing much at any of the thousands of jokes I've heard about it. It's hard to make a joke about such a sad fucked up situation. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

He did more for this country than all of his other relatives combined. He was a great senator who pursued a liberal agenda but was always willing to work with others across the aisle. Really too bad he died before we got his pet project -- health care reform -- passed. Unfortuneatly, the senate is now down one Dem and Mass. law says that a new senator has to be elected in a special election 4 months after his death -- Governer can't appoint someone in the interim. wtf kind of state constitution mandates that you can't elect a new senator "fewer than 145 days and no later than 160 days"? That's fucking retarded. Excuse my language, Massachussettes. silverwasp wrote:Be careful what you wish for... I have 10 younger siblings and I am only 20....

It's a law that was passed by the democratic state legislature during Kerry's run for the presidency to keep Mitt Romney (then Republican governer of Mass) from appointing a Republican senator to replace Kerry. Ironic, especially since it wasn't necessary with Kerry losing. "I love the smell of napalm in the morning. Smells like ... victory"

defiance wrote:He is the one that made that law. It's a state law, he wasn't a state senator. As virus said, ironically the state's Democrats were the primary force behind the law as a hedge against Romney become prez. The idea being that if that happened a Republican would get appointed to serve out the rest of the term and then could run as an incumbent so better to just wait a little bit and then have an election to fill it. Kennedy had no role in the decision then. Last week Kennedy wrote a letter to the legislature asking them to change it back so that the gov could appoint someone quickly. He didn't mention his health but I think many people took it as a "the end is near" acknowledgment. I wouldn't be surprised if he had someone specific in mind to fill his seat if that became possible, dude was on top of his shit and health care reform has always been his big deal. They may still be able to change the law back and get someone in there to act as his proxy but I doubt it. The cynical fucks in the Senate are suggesting they name the bullshit health care "reform" bill after him. That would really be the ultimate irony, after a lifetime of working to fix the fucked up health care system one of the few things that could actually make it even worse gets passed as his "legacy"! Personally I did not like him even a little bit, but since my mother died with brain cancer I know what the family went through. My mother had it only a short time and I know how hard it was. You will hear nothing from me on the subject of his passing. My prayers are with the family.
