So my PC decided to take a shit on me while I was sleeping. When I turned on my screen after having woken up to simply check the status of my downloads, everything looked rather fucked up in 16-bit colors. Thought hmm and next came a simple reboot. After having tried to reboot the mofo says it can't boot up cause its missing a dll. Well fuck. So instead of bothering to do some more heavy profanity I had to borrow a lap top in order to google up the error that came up. Turns out there was some kind of hardware malfunction. Being cheap as I usually am decide to just install a fresh windows XP OS since my PC hasn't been running properly at all for well over the year. Now here is where I just want to take my PC and throw it in a fireplace. I unplug my 1 terabyte external HD in order to save w/e I had in there. IE mostly anime, movies, music, games, porn.... the usual bare essentials. I then proceed to install a fresh Windows XP. Once all the installing bs is complete I plug my HD back in only to find that its been wiped completely clean. Not only that but my 2nd internal HD was also wiped clean, and to top it off the main HD got at least 1/3 wiped clean. So, basically is there any good (free) progs I could use to try and regain all my lost data? Ive lost well over 1 terabyte of music, movie, gaming goodness. So I'm literally ultra pissed atm. Help would be greatly needed cause I honestly don't think I can remember all the shit I've stored through out the years. I'm very disappointed in my external HD as it failed to do EXACTLY what I bought it for. ahhhh_crap wrote:no, splinter has ethics and whut has emotions

Recuva (from the same people as CCleaner and Defraggler) works verywell. Simply do a deep scan of the drive and it will find everything that it can. For best results do it ASAP and make sure you save no files to the drive in the mean time. Simply download, install, run, and follow the instructions. Its pretty straight forward. Note: the deep scan will take a LONG time to run so you might need to leave it for a day or so. The quick scans are just that, but will not do much if the filesystem has been rewritten, though you might try that to see what you get, but the deep scan is probably your best shot. Note 2: You are unlikely to be able to recover everything but if nothing has been written to the drive, there is a good chance you can recover a lot.

I HATE IT WHEN THIS HAPPENS! Sorry just have some still pent up rage when this happened to me last time. Not the same thing but with similar results. And it was on a different computer than this one that I built.

Well unfortunately since all my drives had a wipe I don't have much choice on where to save. Currently though my 1st internal HD didn't have much, mostly system files which the only thing from there I hope to recover are the fonts. The drives I'm most concerned are my 250 gigs and my external terabyte hd. ahhhh_crap wrote:no, splinter has ethics and whut has emotions

This seems extremely weird to me. I can't think of anything that would wipe all your drives like that except a virus or teh hax0rs, or user error. I've dealt with several tons worth of computers that are not working properly, the only time I've ever seen something remotely like this was HDD failure. The odds of all three of your drives failing is extremely slim, unless there is an environmental factor you haven't mentioned? To me it really sounds like something began deleting your data, eventually working it's way to your primary drive and your OS which it ate enough of to make the system non-bootable. Do you have any processes that run overnight? Defrag or something? Also, have you tried plugging any of the wiped drives into another system? Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.
