So apparently there's a problem that afflicts all CIVICS from 96-2000 within a certain VIN set... my first Civic, red '96 had this problem but before it could become too bad I got it fixed. I'm broke'r now than before, so with car #2, AKA black '00, it's a "wtf?"

Basically, the window comes off the track so when you try to roll it up it comes up to the side and starts crunching up against the rubber lining... So, the window goes up, at max, about half way.

I think the only fix is to take my door apart and do some manual labor and hope I don't knock out the window and shatter it into a thousand tiny pieces. And apparently you'll need two bodies to do this. And some special parts. Also, you need the "Repair Manual" to figure out how to take the door apart... and I'm pretty sure this just means "Chilton" but wtf I can pirate Icelandic movies, sixteen petabytes of german fetish porno and indie music my friend produced but not a goddamn Chilton book? What is wrong with the internet these days?

I live in a very shady part of a shady complex. And I work in two very heavily populated shopping centers.

FML.

Parts. Everybody needs parts. My car was unlocked last night but nothing was gone... I think. All I've got are like five box cutters and an open bag of chips now.

Would somebody who speaks "crazytalk" please explain this post to me. I have idea what the main idea behind this post is. I think his window is broken and he is scared his car will get stolen. Can anyone confirm?

My mom's civic was stolen twice and her acura was stolen once. Hondas are usually beaten up and I would imagine easy to break into/hotwire I guess. Because all 3 times were joyrides, not parting out. Which honestly shows how fucking moronic the youth of today are since you can make a killing selling honda parts.

tl;dr: I don't have a Chilton guide, need one.

I don't understand car-tech gibberish, but maybe you do:

1997 models after the affected VINs, all 1998-99 models, and 2000 models thru the affected VINs:

The glass run channel is not seated correctly in the window channels.

Quote:
Corrective Action:

Reinstall the glass run channel. Replace the glass run channel if it is damaged.

Quote:
REQUIRED MATERIALS:
Plastic Cover Adhesive: P/N 08712-0003
REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the door panel. Refer to section 20 of the 1996-00 Civic Service Manual.
2. Remove the armrest bracket, then pull down the plastic cover to gain access to the window regulator.

3. Carefully move the glass until you can see the glass mounting bolts, then loosen them. Slide the guide rearward, remove the glass from the guide, and carefully pull the glass out through the window slot.
4. Check the year and VIN.

* If the vehicle is a 1996 or 1997 within the affected VIN range, replace the window regulator. Go to step 5.
* If the vehicle is not a 1996 or 1997 within the affected VIN range, go to step 8.

5. Remove the two roller guide bolts and the two rear regulator mounting bolts; then remove the front regulator mounting bolts.
6. Disconnect the power window motor connector, and detach the harness clip (it applicable); then lift and remove the regulator through the opening in the door.
7. Install the new regulator in the door, then loosely install the two rear mounting bolts and the two roller guide bolts. Do not tighten the two front mounting bolts yet. Go to step 9.
8. Loosen the window regulator's two rear mounting bolts, two front mounting bolts, and two roller guide bolts.

9. Inspect the glass run channel:

* If the run channel is not sitting in the window channels properly, reinstall it.
* If the run channel is damaged, replace it. Refer to section 20 of the appropriate service manual.
* If the run channel is sitting in the window channels properly, go to step 10.

NOTE: If the run channel is sitting in the window channels properly and the window regulator was not replaced, disregard this service bulletin and follow normal troubleshooting procedures.

10. Reinstall the glass in the door, but do not tighten the glass mounting bolts. Reconnect the power window motor connector, and temporarily reconnect the window switch (if applicable). Raise the window about 100 mm (4.0 in.) from the fully lowered position.

11. Push the glass toward the rear of the door, and have an assistant tighten the two glass mounting bolts, the four regulator mounting bolts, and the two roller guide bolts.

12. Loosen the front channel mounting bolt and nut. Push the front channel toward the glass, and tighten the mounting bolt and nut.
13. Check the window for smooth operation, and check for gaps between the glass and the run channel with the window all the way up.

* If the window does not operate smoothly, or if you see gaps between the run channel and the window, loosen all the mounting bolts, and repeat steps 10 through 12.
* If the window operates smoothly and you see no gaps between the run channel and the window, reinstall the plastic cover, the armrest bracket, and the door panel.

My cousin had this problem. He, my father, and I (all mechanically inclined) managed to take the door apart and basically wedge the window in the up position. Consequently he couldn't roll his window down, but at least it was up. Its been 3 or so years now so I don't remember exactly what we did but I remember that on the inside, there are some small rectangular and circular plastic pieces that pop off revealing screws. After you take out the screws, the entire inside portion of the door just pops off revealing the inner workings of the window.

Try a couple book stores, do-it-yourself auto supply stores, or even a Honda dealer. I can't imagine that a Honda Civic service manual would be that much.

I think I remember seeing HUGE Chilton books at my library. Have you tried there yet?

Oh fuck I forgot about that place. ... Yes, I mean the library. Holy crap -- going after Friday then. My fear is that after I pop off the inside of the door, the entire glass piece will fall out and crash into millions of pieces. I'm fuckin' stoked.

Honda accords are supposed to be the easiest cars to break into out of any of them... good thing you have a civic.

Good luck :D

just put a pillow on the ground so if it does fall, it will be cushioned :)
