So my PC is now in its final days, it no longer runs fullscreen aps as they all always crash after only a few minutes of startup. I'm fortunate enough the thing still even turns on at all anymore. I've had to take off the chipset fan off my motherboard as it was doing more damage then good. The fan now fails to rotate and gets insanely hot to the touch which is the opposite of what its supposed to do. I can't open the fan itself since it has crazy small screws and the smallest screw driver I have is just a tiny bit too big for the holes to fit, I tried to clean it off as best as I could with no luck. I'm back to using an external mini fan to try to keep the chip cool like my first PC but with my video cards.

Clearly seeing this rig is no longer fit for duty. Its time to face the future and adopt a new rig for hopefully a longer time then 5 years.

R.I.P. ASUS nForce 4 A8N SLi Deluxe Edition. AMD Athlon64 3200+ 2.02 GHz. 1 Gig RAM later upgraded to 3 Gigs. Nvidia GeForce 6600 GTx2 later upgraded to Nvidia GeForce 9500 GTx2

New PC means new parts and I'm still pretty noob at building my own rig so I'm asking help on the following

Case - Looking for something big enough to store all the new goodies plus some of the old all while keeping a good amount of airflow since I won't risk water cooling.
Motherboard - Has to support SLi video cards and DDR 3 RAM.
Processor - I'm thinking minimum quad core 3.2 GHz, If possible keeping it within AMD unless Intel is said to be better at cheaper price.
RAM - A good 6 gigs sound like enough, DDR 3 is a must.
Video Cards - Already waiting for nVidia GeForce 470 GTX or nVidia GeForce 480 GTX. Since they will be the first cards to truly support DX11 (I want to keep the video cards in Nvidia since I have the most experience with them. Don't know anything about ATi)

Yes I am going to upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7.

Question 1:
For all this which I'm highly guessing I shouldn't do (use my current PSU) and also upgrade is the PSU. I currently have a 650W PSU so I don't know If I will also need to upgrade this as well and to how high.

Question 2:
I also have a 3 in 1 digital media card reader that I'd like to transfer over to the new system but I don't know what I'd need on the motherboard.

Part of this PC I won't be paying for since its a belated B-Day present. I'm guessing what I'm asking for is quite a heavy deal so Ill dish out some cash later in the future.

Sux to be you, Splinter. Oh wait, I guess that means sux to be me in the future. With the exception of the video card that is exactly my rig. I am not had any issues though, yet.

Replace the PSU, its only going to become an issue later(I 'm not even sure it will power what your already talking about). If possible get a modular one, I think its just the best, and I like a clean case. 850 watt is a good place right now, but 1000 is better i guess.

If the 3 in 1 card is removable(not part of the case) then you should be fine to take it with you. Any modern mobo will support these. I put them in all the time for school districts. Sometimes they have a PCI card to facilitate them and sometimes it goes right on the mobo, I think it goes into the axillary USB place on the mobo.

Newer Nvidia cards have an overscan problem with alot of televisions. I have to keep my driver rolled back so I can avoid this. If you run on a LCD TV and have this problem then I can help you with that fix.

I'm all for AMD procs, but you should get an aftermarket fan, your going to have a lot of heat going on with all that ram and the GPU as it is.

Heat- Get a drive that controls fans and has temperature readouts. You will thank yourself for this. Always watch those damn Nvidia's, they get really hot, to the point where most of my air cooling is based on that.

Hope this helps a little, and I'm always on steam after work if you need tech support for anything.

Unless your rig is older then 5 years I don't see why anyone would have any hardware problems. Other then my video cards on my first PC, that rig still runs like it came right out the box but the video card keeps that rig from running stable and always shutting down. The rig I have now has been my first rig with actual hardware problems all over, first the original PSU died completely about 2 years ago, after that my video cards kept overheating dramatically with newer games at the time so I switched video cards. Unfortunately the 9500 GT cards aren't even 1 year old and they are great and all but since I'm guessing most games to come out in 2010 will most likely run through DX11 which the 9500 GT doesn't support at all.

To be frankly honest I've never had a decent enough rig to run games with medium/high GFX settings. I'm usually always stuck on low. Even when F.E.A.R. first came out this rig could manage high settings with absolutely no lag. Unfortunately that's about one of the last games that came out that I could run high GFX. After I got the 9500 GT's I could run any of the newer Tomb Raider games on high GFX with no lag, but again anything made after I had to stick with low so they could run at a playable frame rate.

I'd like my 3rd rig to at least have a higher lifespan considering the hardware I'm asking for. Both of my previous 2 rigs lasted exactly around 5 years with minimal upgrades through their lifetime. I'd also like the luxury of having games on high graphics without the system choking out every frame, plus the system being able to run future games of more then 1 to run on high settings.

Ok, so here is everything I have so far. Please tell me If I got something that isn't gonna work with something else.

Windows 7 (There is a combo of the same CPU I want with W7, unfortunately its not mentioned if its 32 or 64 bit. I'm aiming for 64)

All this plus tax and S&H comes to $1,953.84 CDN. I could take off everything except motherboard, RAM, CPU, as those are basically the bare bones of what I actually need which makes it $582.23 CDN.

All of those links bring up search return lists...so I couldnt tell what exactly you were picking when the list has about 10 different choices.

Fixed.

I have to be quite honest here. After a couple of days of heavy research and watching some utube vids of reviews. I've learned a lot about PC's then what I did before mine decided to break down. I'm now feeling abit more confident in thinking everything I have will fit together no worries, as long as everything gets here undamaged which is always a possibility.

I will build you that list later today Splinter.

Like what? I'll be transferring my DVD-R/DVD Burner, Sound Card, 2 internal HDD Drives, 3 in 1 card reader which might not even work since its not standard looking, Its built into my case with the faceplate having a little sliding door to access its goodies.

The only things left is the motherboard, 4 ram sticks (2x512mb, 2x1gig DDR Ram), 1 CPU/Heatsink fan, 1 rear case fan, 1 south bridge chip micro fan but its fried, CPU which isn't very fast considering today's technology. I did manage to get the processor from 2.02 GHz to 2.20 GHz with perfect stability unfortunately only after about 3-4 days of running like this kept my system crashing when I run games like it still doing now. I turned the processor back to 2.02GHz but my PC still crashes.
The PSU which I'm going to keep since its fancy looking, and it still runs just fine. The video cards I'm also keeping as they aren't even 1 year old, I got them in June 2009 and could come in handy as backup cards. I'm thinking of keeping the rear fan as well to move into the new case where I could alternatively place it at the floor or the back since the PSU in the new case goes at the bottom. (New case has a slot for a fan at the bottom. and I could also choose to put the PSU at the top)

I really don't know about my case itself. I mean its a great case which the only downside that it's rather small and the jerks at Geek Squad broke the front faceplate so it no longer clicks in. If the PC is moved the faceplate can fall out easy. I also got a bunch of extra little connections that came with my PC that are still in their original packaging bags since I never really knew what they were for. I never bothered with them.
