so in combat, he didn't cut it. But as a lawyer, he's full of gusto.

Definitly my definition of a hero.

I really hate it when the media runs bits about people with PTSD. War is srs business. Give these people some slack. Instead of criticizing them, go sign up for the Armed Forces, Mr. Cushy Network Reporter Douche.

Cause I'm a neocon Ahole...j/k

PTSD is some serious stuff, I'm not dumb enough to think otherwise. This man can't be considered a hero to his troops though, at least in the warzone, as he saw war, and caved. He blamed it on a drug, and though the article is vague on the exacts, the succesful treatment seemed to include yoga and meditation. I practive both those things to some degree, so again, not knocking him there. I'm knocking on him failing his brothers in the face of combat (think his charge reads something along those lines.) Also pointing out that though yoga and meditation can get your head in a good place, it's not a disease treatment. So I doubt he could say "due to my yoga, I'm now capable of going back and doing the job I swoar an oath to do."
Is he a coward? maybe not, maybe that's too strong a title. I won't throw a lot of respect for people who sign up for something, then walk away when it gets too real. Especially when you've got people counting on you as he did.
That said, definitly wouldn't throw a hero title on him. Yea, the work he's doing after the fact to help others out is a good thing. I have big issues with the way people are recruited into the military today, big issues with how their released. I also strongly disagree with giving all this authority to psychologists, so it's a muddy ground at the best.
Won't get into another big fight with ya, but something about you saying "why our military sucks so much" seemed sorta harsh, especially when you then use an example such as a guy failing when it counts to exemplify how things should be done.

For some bizarre reason the Army had him on Mefloquine for malaria prophylaxis. This drug commonly causes nervous system side effects and in some people causes severe psychotic syndromes with incapacitation. The CDC recommendations on malaria prevention calls for using it as a third-line drug for people who cannot tolerate the safer drugs like doxycycline or chloroquine. The neuropsychiatric side effects can last for months after the drug is stopped.

Add PTSD to that mix and you've got an iatrogenic incapacitation. I don't care who you are or how well trained or courageous you are -- you can't function with a psychotic delirium from a drug side effect.

The question I have is why the Army is still using this drug as prophylaxis in a high risk population of combat personell who already have an above average risk for psychiatric complications related to active combat. Probably because it's cheaper and only has to be dosed once a week.
