In an attempt to further its lead among "western nations" in controlling the morality of its populace, the government is stubbornly moving ahead with this Crazy Chinese-inspired National firewall.
Its going to be a fine paving stone on thier road to....well you know the saying. While filtering Child porn, etc may indeed be good intentions, its gravely concerning how they are blatently vague about what the content, qualifications, or URL's themselves are on the black list. The fact that it had to be "leaked" and that they are looking to prosecute the persons who made the black list contents available to the public is crazy.
Here is my favorite part of the article:
"In a June 5 poll conducted on the web site of the Sydney Morning Herald, 99% of the 88,645 people who responded to the survey said they were against the Internet filter. Nevertheless, Conroy told the Sun-Herald in May that the policy "will be going ahead.''"
Wow.
I thought Australia was a bit off with thier adult content legislation with respect to entertainment (ie Gaming), but now i truly see how deeply this christian moral conservatism has infiltrated thier government.

My guess is that its an ingenious plan by a conservative oligarchy to bring into reality the situation faced by the british in the fictional "V for vandetta".

Or a sneaky plan by the British to begin bringing Australia back under their rule as a prison island...
First step? Begin blocking their ability to use the internet... then smartphones.... then all phones......

I heard about this too. Australia seems to be coming way out of right field with stuff like this. I'm so confused as to why in the heck the government is doing stuff like this.

I never understood why they become so dangerously vague concerning these kind of restrictions. Look, define child porn, in the most bluntest fashion, don't willy-nilly about it like a school girl with a caterpillar.
Seriously they just go and say "eww it's icky and gross and illegal and awful". it is, but fucking man up about it and say what it is or else this vagueness is going to hurt a lot of innocent people and I guarantee you there'll be quite a few innocent people thrown into jail by pure mistake for falling under the shade.

Hell this might spawn even more pedos out of frustration from the fact nobody's bothering to explain about these things and still throw you to prison for it without a chance to explain anything, regardless of what you did or didn't do.
I can't believe Australia of all places is becoming one of the most pussy-whipped nations in the world, they live on a fucking island that's 80% desert and where 90% of the wildlife can murder you within the hour. You'd think they'd just shrug off anything less than a platypus scrape as just nothing to worry about.

Course I know this isn't just about trying to filter out child porn, and also trying to filter out other things too. I mean jesus, they just completely abused democracy when the majority were against this internet filter and they still went ahead, just like California a couple of years back.
If you're not going to like what the people say, don't even fucking bother asking, it's insulting.

I hope this is not going to be like what Greece did several years ago where, in their bid to ban all forms of electronic gambling, their interpretation of it as "electronic entertainment devices" also included videogames.
And as a result, videogames were COMPLETELY BANNED in Greece....for THREE MONTHS, before somebody realised that was a big mistake and had to reinterpret.
What is the deal with people being so fucking vague, it causes problems goddamnit, if people were vague in war, we'd have had five fucking world wars by now because of misinterpretation.

Though to be fair, some of the wars in history have been caused by that exact problem.
