...is beginning today! GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALLLLLLLLLL!!!!

Even if you don't much care for the sport, you should at least support USA in as it takes down England tomorrow at 1:30 PM CST on Saturday. I'm going to be in Dallas, TX, and I'm totally going to hit a pub for the event.

Giller/Mrs.Giller, I know you guys are halfway to Dallas, so if you guys are bored and want some crazy Saturday afternoon drinking, just give me a heads up!

The full match schedule is available here, beginning with South Africa vs. Mexico in about 25 minutes (that one ought to be OUCH!). USA is in Group C, along with England, Algeria and Slovenia, so really I think England could be the only problem. AND WE'LL BE TAKING CARE OF THAT TOMORROW!

So tune in! Support you preferred team! Enjoy the world's most popular sport! And if you're in the Dallas, TX area, give me a buzz!

1. Why are you going to be in Dallas
2. Is there a specific place you are watching the game
3. Convince me.

BS "Continuing Legal Education" thing. It's a conference on intellectual property and since I have to do a dozen or so hours of CLE to maintain my law license, I figure it might as well be on topics I enjoy. The wife's coming too though, for moral support.

I've got a few interesting looking backups in case this place is OMGWTFBBQ full when we get there, but right now we're shooting for The Londoner in Addison. One of the other backups is The Londoner in Dallas.

Well, we're trying to think of something to do / somewhere to eat afterwards (we're hoping to hit Fogo De Chao tonight, but it could be postponed if we had company Saturday night), so it'd be a fun overnight trip with more point to it than just Crystals Pizza.

Oh, and the owner of The Londoner posted this video with regard to tomorrow's game:

If that doesn't convince you, I don't know what will!

I was forwarded this article a few weeks ago when discussing soccer and the up and coming world cup with someone at work. It was pretty interesting.

Sporting emotion at its highest pitch

I'll work on him. I can't do much else but sit around this weekend because of my ankle, might as well be in good company and drinking while I'm at it. Don't hold off on Fogo for us. Go tonight and we'll figure out something for dinner Saturday. :)

I'm not going to claim to be possessed of the kind of fervor a lot of people around the world have for soccer, but it's seriously part of the reason I enjoy it while not caring much for other professional sports.

NFL, NHL, MLB, NBA, all our American sports acronyms... they have dedicated and passionate followings, but I just can get myself into them. The players are insanely overpaid, are treated like monstrously important human beings for just playing a game, and have virtually no connection to the locale they purport to represent. College football is a bit better, but it's a much smaller thing and frankly I don't have much enduring, burning passion for my alma mater.

On the other end of the spectrum, you have the Olympics. Each competitor represents his/her nation, so you've got that patriotic/jingoistic pride thing....... but without the same passion (for most people). I mean, I'm glad when the USA wins a gold medal, and I followed the whole Michael Phelps thing, but you almost never see the same frothing-at-the-mouth passion for an Olympic event as you do soccer. Maybe it has too many sports in it.

That leaves the World Cup. While you can always claim (and many/most Americans do) that you just don't care about the sport itself, all around the world it's a combination of the NFL/NBA's uber-excited fanbase with the national representation of the Olympics. It's a unique combination and for some reason, it works for me.

Btw, South Africa is 15 minutes from an insane 1-0 upset against Mexico... holy crap, go RSA!!
SCRATCH THAT! 1-1!

Good, convince him.
And I'm kinda glad to hear that about Fogo -- Mrs. Endyss wasn't too pleased that our massive meat meal was going to get postponed, even by 1 day.
Still, totally come on down, spend the night in Dallas (or drive back, if that's what it takes to convince you =P), and let's do a Saturday night Dallas nightlife thing.

On a funny note, USA shirts are selling BIG in Scotland because of them being the first team against England, and nothing makes a Scotsman happier than England losing in football.

I've gotten into it. I played soccer as a kid but didn't much care for it. After that it just never came up. I'm the type that rarely gets into any sport, but there are times now and then my interest sparks for a while.

So now I'm following the World Cup. I blame the company I work for. They decided to divvy us up randomly among various teams and if we're on the team that wins, we get something. Kinda odd since our placement was random and there's really nothing we can do to control the outcome but... I'm now rooting for Brazil, whose doing well so far.

Suits me, though. I did a report on Brazil when I was a kid so that makes me more interested in them than any other team, anyway.

Go Brazil!

This has already been an epic year for US Soccer. In case you guys haven't heard, the US won it's group this year, which it hasn't done since 1930. It was tied with England for points, but the US team had more goals scored. If anything, the US team has proved that it really can play with anyone and expect to do well. We'll see what happens when we play Ghana in the next game, but we have the best chance in a long time to get pretty deep in the World Cup. If you're on the fence as to care or not this year, is would be a great year to care.

As for me, spending 2 years in Germany gave me the soccer bug, and I love watching these tournaments. I'll be a happy boy if the US and Germany make it to the quarterfinals.

You yanks got ripped apart vs Ghana. Although I would say USA's venture in the 2010 was probly more shaky and lucky. I find they even did better in Germany then South Africa.

As for me I'm cheering for El Tri. The entire right side of the chart has all the heavy hitters. I recon Brazil is on easy street and they will reach the final easy.
The other side has Germany, England, Argentina, Spain, Portugal. Shit the entire right side is nothing but death squads.

Mexico will be lucky if they manage to beat Argentina, even so the opponents ahead are at a much higher difficulty to beat. I'd just like to see them advance to the semifinals in my lifetime. (Although they did before I was only 1 year old and and didn't get to experience it.)
