Sorry for the nerdgasm. I interviewed for a position I found on craigslist as an Account Manager/Recruiting Specialist for a behavioral health firm today. I went in and met the other account managers and they talked briefly about the job with me and had me complete a MS Excel "test" which is basically like adding data to spreadsheets, copying and sorting the data. I passed that although I wasn't expecting to take it.

I then interviewed with the company's Chief Development Officer in her office with one of the account managers shadowing it. I think what won me over was my confidence and my education with the healthcare industry which they were kind of looking for. I was still nervous as hell though. One other thing that I couldn't shake that was strange yet awesome was the fact that the HR guy looks exactly, EXACTLY, like the TF2 medic. Holy shit I need to get a picture with him.

Anyway, they went over my resume, asked me typical questions about my experience and direction, asked me to associate two items by what they have in common like "a wheel and a ball" -- I'm assuming as a behavioral health firm they want to see how I assign meaning to things. We discussed salary and benefits, I asked my questions about them and the company. The CDO showed me around and I met everyone and she told me she was impressed and I was the forerunner at this point.

So I'm driving home in my Hyundai feeling like a badass because I rocked my first job interview and I get a phonecall from an account manager and she offers me the job. They said they originally would get back to me next week when I was interviewing and would call my references, but they discussed it when I left and felt I was perfect for them. I asked to sleep on the offer and they didn't have an issue with that.

Holy crap guys. Thanks so much for the support. I really feel like accepting this offer and it would be amazing to get away from the sales side of marketing which I was scared I'd have to do. NOW LETS FRAG ON TEMPEST!

Congratulations.
After hanging around here, you should be ready to work for a behavioral health company. The craziness will seem normal.

If that HR guy looks like the medic, do you think you could get a video clip of him saying "I AM THE UBERMENSCHE!"?

Congratulations! You are the 2nd person I know to find a great job on Craigslist! My brother found his current job on there and it was the perfect fit for him. I hope this job is THE job for you! You're already rocking it there and that was just for the interview! Good luck! :)

Thanks guys! I start on the 28th so I'm starting to study some of the business material they've given me. It'll definitely take a while to get used to - it's a HUGE transition for me. However, at the end of the day there's still a community full of pDs to frag amirite?

First day was today. That was a surreal experience.

I basically shadowed the account managers today and watched them work and witnessed what they do and all of that. It's just weird to think about everything they know and do and how much I need to learn and be trained. I mean, I went from being a college student to wearing business casual every day and talking with psychologists, psychiatrists, and other hard core medical professionals, traveling, doing marketing presentations, being on the phone all day solving strange issues across the country. It's just unlike anything I've ever done before and the learning curve looks a bit intimidating.

My co-workers and boss are really cool though, which is great since I can always consult them in a small office setting like this. I'm already going out of town on Friday to introduce a psychologist to a nursing home with another account manager. It's just a lot of change really quickly and I hope I can keep up.

Anyway, this week is going to be tough but hopefully I can beast through it alright and learn a bunch. Getting my hands dirty is probably going to start tomorrow, but at least I know what's in store for me which is always a good thing.

You'll do great. It's always crazy intimidating when you start your first "real" job! I mean you went to school for it and they hired you because they feel like you can do it, it can't be that hard can it?!? And then you realize, holy shit, this is all me, this is crazy! No worries, I know I went through those feelings as I'm sure most everyone has. There's always a learning curve but I'm sure you'll catch on to everything in no time! Glad you like it so far!
