So I had this project a few years back where I would take old computers, wipe the HD and load Edubuntu educational Linux OS, pair them with some monitors and give them to schools.
Well, no one wanted them because they thought they were too old and they could not use their school software on anything but a Windows OS system.
So, I was stuck with a dozen rigs, none higher than a Pentium 4, and some were really ancient. Like one had 16 Mb of memory.
Along with the rigs, there were 14 CRT monitors that were collecting dust. About a quarter of those were brand new, but weighed a ton.
Here is the bunch in the only photo I could find on a non-failed HD:
Well, the local mall had an e-waste day where you could bring your old comps and monitors and any other electronic crap and they would haul it off for free. Usually you would have to pay to get rid of it because it's considered hazardous waste and can't be thrown out with the rest of the garbage. So, after two pickup truck loads, it was all gone.
All gone except for the four or five HDs and various CD readers and some memory I pulled out of the newer machines for I-don't-know-what-reason. I still have to wipe the HDs because they contain data from my old office, which I will get to eventually.
So, what filled up an area of 5 x 5 x 5 feet, now fills a couple of shoeboxes with the essence of that project.
