With Minecraft now officially released I'm toying with the idea of restoring our server. It should be easier to maintain and expand now that there aren't new patches coming out every other week.

I'm working out permissions and settings, but the setup I'm trying to go for is:

A new player starts in a stargate tower in Nexus, effectively unable to do anything.
Once they're added to the whitelist they can use the stargates to access different worlds.

There are multiple stargate networks, each with an access point in Nexus:
- Public Worlds: Worlds configured with vanilla settings (planning on including 2)
- Private Worlds: Can be visited by anyone, but only built by their owners or select others; mods can vary how these worlds work

There are stargates for two other networks, but I'm not sure what those will be yet. Could be Adventure worlds, or PvP, etc. Time would tell.

Anyway.. I'm at the point now of starting up the two vanilla worlds and wanted to see if anyone had any good seeds for them. Otherwise I'll just create a bunch in single-player and upload a couple nice looking ones.

You cant use that term vanilla because what you call vanilla is not , Is this real vanilla or your modded vanilla ?
it doesn't change the fact that most people think Jews are much like the Ferengi of Star Trek. More interested in acquiring "profits" than anything else. -Erkdog

I never called the old world "vanilla". Nice try propping up a straw man there, though.

The settings on these vanilla worlds will be.. vanilla. No protections against anything, no rules, anything goes. Have fun keeping it looking nice. The only limitation will be that normally imposed around the spawn point, which is also where I'll be putting the stargate so nobody can screw it up.

Other worlds on other stargate networks might have different settings.

P.S. Well, I suppose they would be modded insofar that they won't be accessible until the player is white listed. Oh noes! No longer vanilla!

Yay! I'm happy. I've been playing a little on my own, but multiplayer is just much more fun.

I've added a third stargate network with access to our two original worlds.

Given how much the game has changed since those worlds were made, the plan right now is for them to be for visiting only. Nobody will have the capability to build or do anything that could alter things. To that end, protection is also pretty tight with Creeper terrain damage, Enderman block moving, fire spreading, and buckets all being disabled. They're there to be looked at... not to be changed actively or naturally.

I've gotten both slated Normal worlds added with their stargates built at around the 0x0 coordinate (also the default spawn point) and a 40x40 area around there protected, to ensure nobody ever griefs the entry point. Beyond that protected zone, anything goes.

And just for the record, vanilla is vanilla not only in physical mechanics but operational mechanics as well. I will not play referee if people infringe on others' buildings. And I won't try to mash together "rules" or "guidelines" either. If drama ensues I'll dump the world and replace it with a new one. Problem solved.

If you want a world you can build in alone (or with select others), let me know and we can get you set up with a Private world with customized settings to your liking.

For the moment, though... not quite ready to go live. While the worlds are in place, I have just a few more permissions problems to work out.

Would it be possible to also link our offline single player worlds as well?

Not 100% sure what you mean...

It's possible to copy a single-player world to the server, if that's what you mean. The kind of access you want people to have to it would be customizable after that. Of course, if you made any changes to the world in single-player after that, the only way to get those changes on our server would be to re-copy it.

If I can get the stargate permissions working as advertised, I can make gates that connect to a lone, specific world with very limited access--as in one player--if you want to play single-player-like but on the server. The permissions give quite a bit of flexibility.... if I can get them working. =/

Okay.

I had to change out my permission handling plugin, but it seems to be working as intended now. So... I think it's safe to say the server is "open"--at least for a preliminary test phase. It's located at the same hostname/IP as it was before. If you want to check it out and don't remember the location, shoot me a PM.

Once I'm comfortable that the whitelisting mechanism works, we can advertise the IP publicly. Any would-be griefers will find themselves unable to do anything in the Nexus and unable to gate to any other worlds. So they should be bottled in nicely.

One last note: Inventories.

The two vanilla "normal" worlds each maintain their own inventories, to prevent people from taking items from other worlds to them.

The Nexus, old worlds, and protected worlds share a common inventory. The Nexus and old worlds have strict limitations so being able to move items between them can be necessary for survival. With protected worlds, they could be as limited as the Nexus to visitors, if the owner so wishes, so again: matter of survival. For those worlds' owners, if they want to mine to build, it's up to their own self-discipline to enforce it.

P.S. I'll probably continue to make tweaks to the Nexus, but I'll be careful not to do anything that will leave people spawning in mid-air. =)
