any of you guys good at trig?
i got this assignment and cant figure out how to get the angle in this damn question

2 + cos2x = 3cosx

i keep getting :

(cosx)^2 = -2

which is impossible

any help?

It's been a while, but one way you can test how an equation will behave is to start plugging in numbers.  I think this is the solution.  Sort of a trick question designed to make you waste your time in order to teach you there are tricks.  I tried using 0 =x.  cos(0) =1.  So if you have:

2 + cos (2*0) = 3 cos (0)

2 + cos (0) = 3 cos (0)

2 + (1) = 3 (1)

2 + 1 = 3

Which works with the equation so x = 0.

Looks right to me, Cantrip.   Remember though, that sinusoidal functions have infinite periods in an open domain, so you have to take account for all of them.

So, 0 is just one of the answers.  It also equals eachother at 30, 390, etc. So that is pi/3 + 2*pi*N.  It also equals eachother at -120, 240, 600, etc.  So, your other answer is 7pi/3 + 2*pi*N

So your final answers: 0, pi/3 +2pi*N, 7pi/3 +2pi*N       (in radians).

0, 30º+360N, 240º+360N   (in degrees, though in calculus you can only have it in radians).

That's only if they DO NOT give a specific domain in which to find X.

It looks tricky because of the coefficients, but be sure to remember the trig values for the axis angles (0 {360}, 90, 180, 270).

You could also plug both equations into your graphing calculator:

Y1 = 2+cos(2x)
Y2 = 3cos(x)

Find the intersecting values so you can see how this works graphically.

Stand by for a reproducible result.  Damn you, must answer question.

EDIT -GPAC edited his answer.  Looking at his answer, and at a basic refresher of trig, I'm going to retract my answer - though it's the answer, or at least one of the answers if there are others, like 360, and multiples of that..  Will give it five more minutes of review, then I quit.

Haha, I just realized he psoted this at 7:30 PM, so I guess he either has an answer or got help from someone else by now. :B.

So, Carr, anyone, any more problems?  I like math.

LOL.

Carr, is that first 2 within the first cosine a superscript?   As in Cos2x ?

EDIT- Hmm.  I clicked on the superscript box but I guess it's not showing up.  I intended the number 2 in the above to be superscripted.  As in to the power of 2.

If it is, I will be fucking pissed.  Haha.  That is when I don't like math when I did a problem that wasnt right, or useless.
