Ok here is a list of questions that may be completely evident to you...but totally unknown to others and myself.

1.a) Should I be able to see the textures on objects while in Hammer??

1.b) Is there a way I can be sure the textures have applied??

2) Can I transfer maps w/o need for a compiler?

3) Where should I save the maps? (ex. sourcesdk_content)

More Questions will come soon!

1a. - you should be able to see the textures in hammer as long as you have your 3D window set to "3D shaded textured polygons".

1b. - if you can see them, then they have been aplied.

2. - what do you mean by transfer?  if you mean play them, then no.  you have to compile the map using any compiling software to convert the hammer file (.vmf) into a map file that the game will be able to run and understand (.bsp)

3. - save the maps anywhere you want to as long as you know where they are.  after you compile the map, the .bsp will need to go into your maps folder to be able to play the level.  in your options menu in hammer, you can set it to automatically save a .bsp to your maps folder that way you don't have to move files around every time you compile a map.
