you have a three options... the two you mentioned above and
third is to have a friend "sit" your account while you're away. This has to be arranged with a GO.
if you leave your account in vaction mode it can't be attacked but you wont get any res. if you just leave it be resources will build up and people will inevitably raid, so any D or fleet will be destroyed.
also if you don't log into an account for a week it goes inactive. After a month of inactivity you're account is deleted.
Best thing from a playing point of view is to have a freind sit your account, but it might be awkward to get someone. i'm not sure if any of us can sit it, because of the multi IP thing. you could ask a GO. but probably simplest thing might be to go into vacation mode, and have a friend log in now and again (every couple of weeks) if you can't so you're account isn't deleted, or just take you're chances that it wont be deleted by the time you come back. being away a month though would cut it fine, you might come back to it having being deleted just a day or two.
