I dont' know if this will work but i want to set up a wireless cable internet connection between 2 homes. 75-80 foot distance. it's across the street with very low traffic but the homes are aluminium sided. sooooo anyone think this will work. if so will the pings be ok? will the random cars passing by affect the connection? my computer is next to alot of windows will that help play into affect? I would just like some opinions before money is spent attempting a lost cause. oh yea and will the internet company find out? nottheballz: ask her if i will ever have sex again lol {pDs} Face: rosie nottheballz: na she stoped {pDs} Face: 2 timing bitch

Most routers advertise something like 100 feet outdoors IIRC, they also advertise at 100 feet through heavy walls IIRC. Id double check what it said on the box, and maybe call their tech support before trying it. Setting both computers near windows on the second floor would probably be your best bet, but then again i dont know much about these kinds of things. Ive had people (friends) drive by a street away and get reception on their laptops from my router, so I would assume that it wouldnt be out of the question for you. you can buy routers that have a greater distance, i've seen 100m/300andsomething feet advertised somewheres... Solid walls aren't usually a problem, I can pick up the network of someone in my estate.... no idea who.... but it's handy when my broadband goes out, as keeps happening lately... although our houses are made of brick, not alluminium... biggest issue is security methinks.... you'll both need some good firewalls... no expert though... yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

This is totally doable - worst case you buy directional antennas (or build 'em yourself). I have a Linksys WRT54G that you can flash with custom software (it runs a super stripped down version of Linux that has been reverse engineered) - one of the features is a that you can boost the signal on it, even beyond FCC-compliant strength. I have mine boosted about 30% and it passes through my house and most of my neighbors houses on both sides - that is with the standard antennas that come with it. The biggest degrader of signals are trees and pipes containing water so if you can avoid those you might get away with a stock WAP covering that much area.

Yea, I have that very same router ^^ plus the Wireless-G access point from Linksys for my PC, and it works a dream boosted only to about 15-20 % full strength (beaming through 3 steel reinforced concrete walls and about 20 Meters of space).
I swear, If this thing were to be turned up fully (which would actually be illegel in this country because the power is too high), then it could probably microwave the contents of my neighbours fridge .
Plus the router is nearly completely customizeable... meaning you can allocate each PC their own IP and share of the connection speed (up and down). plus many other features which I have never used and dont even understand yet .
