DAMN so this kids sittin on 70k+ of rez with like 30 defensive units....i had a good enough fleet to take him on and be profitable....so i attack i dont have the battle report but about 1 minutite before i attack his entire fleet of cargos comes back from a raid...10 of them...so now my 49 fleet is attacking 10 cargos and 30 defense (20 RL 10 LL) . It was a massacre///for both sides i lost 50k of rez in units and he lost over 100k.....i didnt check if a moon appeared but i wish i had recyclers sice close to 70k i think was chillin in space....anyways I AM PISSED i lost like 17 units 10 of which were light fighters a few heavy and some cargos......so i ended up loseing 10k of rez totall after my pirating mission\

lawl that blows. This happend to me, i was doing a raid early on with 2 fighters and 2 cargos, while my ships were one the way his defense research finished :(

its random, but usually happens after a big battle where a lot of stuff would be floating about.

hmmm.... i don't think anyone has said this here yet. BUT WHEN ATTACKING ALWAYS ESPIONAGE AS CLOSE AS YOU CAN BEFORE YOUR FLEET HITS! i usually have a probe hit the target 15 - 20 seconds before it hits. that way if the probe comes up with any nasty surprises i can recall with only a couple of seconds to spare. yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.
