what do all these colours and letters after their name mean? i gather (i) means inactive . i am still finding things out as i go along so sry if its a stupid noob question!!!

yeah, they are in vacation mode. you cannot attack them

they are strong, they have over 5 tiems your points, and so they are prevented from attacking you, and you them

also

(*) means activity on the planet in the last 15 mins. this can mean they are/were logged in or that someone else probed or attacked them. (30) means that the activity was 30 mins ago etc.... it will go up as far as (59) before it won't show altogether.

yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.
