the cool thing about the philips is that the face is completely black until you turn it on, it lights up blue. but the volume bar doesnt light up until you touch it, at which point the lights trail your finger. its nasty awesome. plus 30gigs of music, and the also have a video one out now i believe. i want to buy one now.
Yeah, the interface to it really is pretty fucking cool. I've seen a lot of trendy kids playing with their iPods start glancing over to try to see what I have, and a lot just end up asking if they can mess with it for a sec.
For Whut because he's my lover:
Philips HDD6330
Pros
====
- 5-band fully controllable equalizer (there are presets too but fuck that noise)
- Awesome, intuitive interface; probably the only interface style that's actually a lot cooler than iPod's
- Does photos, allows photo slideshows with music
- If you have some dock or cord or something that you can get for it, you can use it as a direct USB host -- i.e. transfer photos to it from your camera, rather than from a computer. This effectively means 30 gigs of storage for your stupid USB device.
- Syncs with Windows Media Player or whatever other program you want to use.
- You can still drag and drop shit in Windows Explorer into the Data folder if you just want to use it as a portable HDD.
- The headphones it comes with are actually impressively nice, considering they're included (iPod earbuds are pieces of shit). Also comes with a black foam sleeve thing that works fairly well.
- The usual customizable album art, on-the-go playlists, etc.
- Built-in FM radio tuner, digital voice recorder, digital FM recorder
Cons
====
- Interface startup is a bit slow. It takes several seconds to load when you turn it on, which isn't really that bad, but if you're obsessive compulsive and have to have your music ready NOWNOWNOW then I guess it might be irritating. One of my friends likes being able to just smack his iPod on and have it play whatever it feels like as soon as he gets in his car, but I don't really use mine in the car so it doesn't bother me.
- It's really sexy looking, but partially because the surface is PSP-like. This means it shows fingerprints pretty clearly and that a microfiber cloth is the best way to clean it. If you don't really give a shit about whether the surface is perfect then it's not a big deal. The included foam sleeve protects it pretty well.
- The battery indicator tends to underestimate the life left. Nothing major, but you'll see the indicator flashing empty like it's trying to tell you OH FUCK TURN THIS SHIT OFF RIGHT NOW, except it turns out you can still listen to like a full-length album and it'll still have some life left.
- Uses a proprietary port to connect to the computer (the other end is standard USB). iPod does this too, but it's still fucking stupid.
- I liked how I could use Windows Explorer to drag-n-drop music on my iRiver at will, but no one does that anymore. Syncing is lame. </emo>
