just curious as to what people here make of the whole Vista lark... a hell of a lot of noise has been made here about the launch of the personal editions, good and bad. they are predicting it will be on 100,000,000 systems by the end of the year, sounds a bit ambitious to me. It sounds good in principle, but with the min specs needed to run it 512mb ram as well as a 128mb directX 9 Graphics card (from what i've read at least) it seems to me that it's a whole lot of bloatware in a nice Shiny package. Sure they've introduced nice new functions, but from what i can tell al lot of these functions, like the new search supposedly, are preforming continuously, regardless of whether you need them... I would rather my OS nice and light, not a resource hog... i've also read that it contains a lot more invasive DRM protocols, virtually giving them the power to shut you out of your comp, although i'm sure some of this is just paranoia. What do you guys reckon? are all the negatives being forwarded by various parties valid, or are they typical apprehension over any major changeover to something new? yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

I am avoiding it as long as I can get away with. If there is ever a game I really want that is Vista-only then I will download that motherfucker off the pirate bay. I'll buy a Mac before I give MS another penny. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

I get it free from the notebook I just got but I don't know. The the CAL forums someone posted his experience of it and he liked it. I suppose it all depends on everyones tastes. Microsoft will officially stop supporting Windows XP in 2011. Ask me then.

i see no problem with it. XP had a lot of issues over the years and vista seems to be a lot better in every way. a friend of mine has been using vista for a short while now (microsoft sent him an early copy for free). he seems to love it and has had nothing but good things to say about it to me. he doesn't work for microsoft, he just sells their products. he also received (and gave me) a copy of Office 2007 enterprise edition. the new look of office is nice (im running it in XP), but its way better looking in vista.
vista is a resource hog, that is true. but with the cost of ram these days, i don't see an issue with it. i don't mind spending $50 putting in more ram for an operating system that will make use of it. the downfall is that most people don't have 64-bit processors, so the whole 3D look of vista won't be experienced by those people.
oh well, there will always be people that hate microsoft. i'm impartial. i feel if you don't like them (for whatever reason) don't use their products. the fact is they do build good stuff or it wouldn't be used by so many people. nothing is perfect and no company isn't corrupt. and last i herd, they are already working on the next operating system.

I'm thinking upgrading my notebook to Windows Vista Premium edition since it's free. "For someone who was never meant for this world, I must confess I'm suddenly having a hard time leaving it. holy shit that was quick... well at least they're focused. Still its not that reassuring that they are already working on the first service pack and it only after launching. Edit: Test Drive it here!?!yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

Does your friend play any graphic intensive games with it? My question is with it running in the background will it rob other resources and mess your gaming up? Personally I will wait as long as I can. Dick Cheney's Mechanical Heart wrote:I wish I had some vicodin, it's been a long time. he has a new XPS. i don't what speed the processor is running at, but i know he has 4 gigs of RAM. he does play a lot of games on it which is the reason he got it. he says its not a pull on his machine (duh). of course there are people like me who don't have a new computer, but i'm not worried. he said its very customizable, so i'm sure if its a pull on your machine, you can turn things down or off. i plan on making the switch, but im waiting a few months because i don't have much free cash right now. i might make it sooner if he can get me a copy of it for free, but i'm not in a hurry. i will say one thing though, don't get the basic version as it is a stripped down useless version meant only for word processing and internet.
anyway, they were working on the service pack for vista before they even launched. you can't release something as big as an entire new operating system without finding little bugs here and there. sure thats what testing is for, but they would be testing forever. i have no problem with microsofts updates, unlike steam, they actually fix the errors in their product, not make them.

The only thing I like about Vista is that it will force all new computers to come with a video card that doesn't suck horrifically like the intel shit most low-end consumer boxes come with these days and means that the baseline for 3d-acceleration on a PC will be raised. everything else about vista is stupid: 1) It's overpriced. 2) It's full of evil fucked up DRM (this is the big sticker for me, I'm so sick of DRM bullshit). 3) It doesn't do anything I can't already do in XP and won't until DX10-only games come out (which could be years!) 4) It has the dumbest marketing campaign since WinME. 5) Did I mention it doesn't do anything that XP can't already do? 6) The UI sucks, it's a cheap rip-off of OSX. (As a former Mac hater I have to admit that OSX is awesome and I would run it on my PC if I could and if more games were released for it). 7) They spent over $4,000,000,000 USD and five years to create an OS that isn't any better than XP but has a totally new UI that will require a shitload of training for idiots who are finally just now learning how to use XP/2K. If you do tech support the Vista+Office2k7 transition is a fucking nightmare come true. 8) It's a resource hog for no good reason. (not a big deal since shit always gets faster, but it's still stupid). If I were MS I would have milked the XP line longer and released an OS that took XP and spruced up the UI a little bit and improved security as a bridge product to Vista, they could have gotten something like this out on schedule and then used the time that freed up to actually finish the Vista project and get things like winFS and all the other shit they had to dump. It also would have eased the transition to the new Vista UI. In my opinion Microsoft would be dead in five years if they didn't have their monopoly and that fat pile of cash. I've not met a single IT professional who has a good opinion of MS these days or who is excited about any current or upcoming MS product. The only people who love MS are people who get paid by MS and even a lot of them will talk mad shit if they don't think anyone else will find out. Your friend may not work for MS but if he sells their products he still gets paid by them one way or another, he has a financial interest in hyping Vista.
