Anyone here play the stock market? What's your strategy? I've been getting into it recently, it seems shockingly easy. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

What exactly are you doing in the stock market? ALWAYS straddle. Interesting fact: I make money when the market goes down. You wanna take this to Fuck Town? Oh gadzooks, yes!

At this point I have only a few hundred in the market, but I've built a couple of model portfolio using google finance. primary focus has been ETFs. The few hundred I do have in the market is in an emerging markets ETF. How do you make money when the market goes down? I know about shorting stocks but that seems super risky. I've read that re-investing dividends can crashes profitable over the long term because you get more stock per dollar if the stock price drops further than the dividend and eventually the price will go back up leaving you with more stocks than if the price never tanked. I'm definitely looking at long-term investing so things like this interest me. The ETF I own does a ~1.8% dividend which is automatically reinvested into it, and it seems hard to go wrong with emerging markets over the long haul, eventually those fuckers will emerge, know what I mean? hey ETF's are great. I only read a little about them though before i left the stock market (real-estate is funner ) I did mostly options trading during my stint and i never lost any money. By straddling I would place a call/put on each side of the stock. Thats break even. Depending on how well you can analyze your technicals you should be able to tell which way the stock is gonna move, so you place more on one side then the the other. If it winds up moving your way you make profit, if it moves the other way you break even on the trade no harm, no foul.I would suggest taking a course of some sort. You wanna take this to Fuck Town? In Dec I sold a bit of stock I had and bought myself a new car. The real ticket (a few years ago) was hedge funds. Don't believe all the rage now, because the market is saturated with them and the edge is gone, but 5 years ago..oh boy. get your ass to mars

my strategy has been more to identify sectors I think will grow well over the next decade or two, figure out the best ETF for that sector and whatever companies are the best value. I only have money in an emerging markets ETF, but thats because I don't have a lot of money to gamble in the stock market right now. I wish I did though, one stock I picked has gone up 40% over the past month, that would of been a shitload of money. I'm really just building some model portfolios to see how well I can do in theory so that when I do have money to play with I'll know where to put it. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.
