Suppose you wanted a new 939 CPU and had a limited budget - would you get:

1) Opteron 170 (2ghz dual-core) @ $190

2) Opteron 148 (2.2ghz  single-core) @ $110

3) A64 (2.4ghz single core) @ $90

I'm leaning towards #1 - despite being the most expensive it is still the cheapest dual core option available, and I'm sure I could OC it a fair bit.

If you're gonna go 939 I suggest you do it NOW, AMD took the last socket 939 orders late last year (they are discontinued) If I was gonna get an AMD proc I'd go with either  the AM2 or the socket 1207.

It's a replacement for my A64 3000 (OC'd @ 2.4ghz). I'm trying to make my set up last as long as possible since I don't want to buy DDR2 until I have no choice. I'm happy with current performance (hell, I could probably push it a few hundred more mhz if I really tried), but as you pointed out the time to buy a 939 chip is now since they are only going to get more expensive now that the supply is shrinking. I just got my tax refund so I figured the most efficient use of a bit of it would be to buy a decent upgrade before it's no longer economically justifiable (which happened to me with my poor AXP 1700, it was only $50 more expensive to buy an entirely new motherboard and CPU than to buy a better AXP!).

I actually finally just gave in and went with the Opteron 170 - it's dual cored so that was enough to justify it in my head finally. even if I can't get it faster than my current CPU in clockspeed it's still got the second core on it! (and more L2 cache).
