high end or low end? Dell Lappy's are good over this side of the water too, and usually they are the most competative price wise at the lower end (and sometimes at the higher end too! friend just got a killer off them for half nothing...

the only thing about Dell is that you might wanna get rid of the crapware that comes with it.

Dunno anything about apples apart from the fact they are great if your using it for media editing and shite like that.
yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

I may get a dell but I was told they were crap by someone I know. Not really sure.  I am willing to spend about 1,000 to 1250. That is all I will probably have to spend since I still need to buy books next fall.

dells aren't horrible, im dell service certified, and use to work on them all the time at my last company. i've owned a few dell laptops, and have never had a problem with them. the  only thing i can stress when buying a laptop is get the extended warranty(This is with any company dealing in laptops). cant tell you how many machines i worked on that were 5-10 days out of the warranty and the customer got caught fronting the bill. as for apple laptops i see alot of college kids in my area using them, there great for surfing, media, pretty much anything you want, your just sort of limited on your gaming ventures, so really it depends on what you want.

As far as Dell goes, yes, they have become more reliable.  Hell, I can think of another reason to buy Dell is that they are the owners of "Alienware" and have been putting out some pretty decent machines since then, either high or low end.  All in all, if your looking at a new laptop, make sure it comes with an Intel Core 2 Duo (doesn't matter which one), a gig of ram (minimum), and a Nvidia graphics card and your good to do just about anything.

On another note, if you like playing Steam and am thinking about owning a Mac, don't worry, they do have a plug in for them that allows them to function just fine.  Mac's are probably 1 of the most powerful and inexpensive make of computer out today.  The rumor you heard about Mac's not being effected by viruses was correct!  There isn't any virus programs that effect Mac's as of yet, keep in mind that they have been out for quite some time and there is still no sign of a virus, even in the distant future.

And I'm an avid PC supporter and even I would buy a Mac, anything to stay away from Microsoft Vista.  If you do decide to get a Dell, try and ask them if they can install a version of XP Pro or Media Center on you laptop, Vista has a lot of problems with it due to it just coming out.  My suggestion would be to get a Mac and be done with it for the next few years.

most viruses are designed for windows so macs won't get em...also incase you guys didn't know you can dualboot a mac. ie run windows and osx from same machine.

Something tells me that he's not that advanced to dual boot a system, if he does, more power to him.  In my experience, only the more experienced OS tweekers will know what their doing on that subject.
