I was listening to the radio this evening when i heard radio personality on KFI, John Ziggler, mention a new study that says a prius, from "dust to dust" (or from creation to destruction) consumes 50% more energy of an h2 hummer. The main issue is the production and disposal of the batteries. Apparently, the only nickel deposits capable of producing the batteries found in prius batteries come from a mine/factory outside ontario, canada. The factory has so ravaged the surrounding landscape that its now the key location for NASA moon rover testing. want the facts? found em hur.... http://www.ncpa.org/sub/dpd/index.php?Article_ID=14304hope you all enjoy killing the planet, prius owners, you snotty fucks!

this was discredited nearly a year ago, within days of the initial study being released. it is true that the prius batteries are not good for the environment, but total pollution levels involved in the manufacture and use of a prius are better than a hummer. there are standard engine vehicles that ARE better than a prius in total pollution due to their high gas mileage and lack of gigantor batteries, the hummer is not one of them. As I recall, total pollution is the key there, if you are counting just CO2 emissions then the Prius and other hybrids are still superior. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

Funny, I just read an article on that study. The study was based on the total energy consumption to produce and dispose or recycle both vehicles. It wasn't just the batteries, but the energy required to produce the various components used in the Toyota. One major cost was in recycling the special composite frame the Toyota uses when it's ready for the scrap heap. I believe that when all is said and done, the Toyota costs about 9 times the energy in it's expected life time. Dick's right about buying the non-hybrid Toyota if you are concerned about the environment.
BTW, all those Eco friendly Toyota commercials, you know, zero land fill, reduced manufacturing energy costs, many Toyota manufacturing facilities have started assembling their vehicles using major sub assemblies only. Meaning, they have contracted out most all the parts, minor assemblies and outside processes to smaller non Eco friendly and less efficient companies and bring in the finished major sub-assembles for assembly, thus they can claim that in their facilities are using less land fill and energy.
Bottom line, why do you think the marketing guys make so much money?

The life expectancy of a prius is 3x less than that of a hummer. That means in the life span of a hummer, three priuses, batteries, steel, components, are produced. Not only are the batteries fucking up the environment but the mining, refining, forging, recycling and disposal of the new steel in each of these cars is even more taxing on the environment. The ultra green Ralph Nader says the best way to perserve energy when it comes to automobiles is to run it until its dead as disco cuz the production of the vehicles is whats really taxing the environment. If you really want to be energy efficient, buy an 89 geo metro. Not only does it run on three cylinders and gets 50 mpg (without having NiCd batts) but it had the best aerodynamics of any car of its time. Geo Metro. Its name means Earth for fucks sake.
