So I recently purchased the orange box thing.  I installed episode 2 and was all set to play.  However, the game doesn't work.  It gets to the loading screen and then just shits the bed.  An error comes up that says the game requires at least DirectX 8.0.  I know I have at least DirectX 8.0 because I can play HL2 and all the other steam games.  I was just hoping that someone could help me figure this shit out.  Either you have had the problem or heard about it or suggestions about where to go or what to do to fix it.  I know I can go to the steam support forums but they suck major ass.  Any help would be great.  Thanks.

Also, sorry I haven't been on the forums lately.  I don't have a good excuse I just didn't feel like checking.

what card do you have? i have the same thing with my MX420. the issue is, although my card is directX 8 and 9 compatible, at the hardware level it is not fully compliant, it's still basically a  DirectX7 card patched to run the newer versions. so i  can't run it anything from the orange box.

the only solution for me anyway is to get a new card, i'd bet it'll be the same for you.
yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

Thanks for the info.  If that is the case, needing to get a new graphics card, I am screwed because I have a laptop and can't get a new graphics card.  I may have just wasted 50 bucks, which means I am an idiot and I hate steam even more.

I just tried to play TF2 and it did the same thing.  Is getting a new card the only solution?  Or is there something else I can do?

last ditch effort would be to update your vid drivers, and run dxdiag to see if you have any type of DX corruptions

To Lemmi you listen, then shit your pants if it doesn't work and go cry in a corner.  Cry for a long time.  Cry so long you can't cry no more and have to make yourself a peanut butter and jelly sandwich because you forgot to eat.  Then cry a little more, but more out of a curiosity to see if you can still cry - to see if your heart is still into it.  Fake that cry until, well, you get tired of it and feel like making another PB&J sandwich - with milk this time. Then grab the Orange Box and see if it makes you cry some more.  If not, then get angry.  Get really angry.  Get angry at your parents for ever having sex and giving birth to you.  Then Get angry at God, just to see if he strikes you down. When he doesn't, get really cocky about it and taunt God.  Taunt him really good and feel better because you are winning on account you have not been struck down.  Then kinda stop and take a look at the world to gain a little perspective. Wipe those tears away little one.

Then go out and get another video card.

I went to Fry's today to check out what they had.  Close to newegg.com prices on the 8800 320MB card.  But newegg has them beat by a Benny for the 8800 640MB card.  However, the game will run with cards under $150.

Sucks ass, and not in a good way.  The alternative is to do what I have been doing for the last few months: bitching about getting a new card, having everyone tell me what kind of card to get, then bitching about it some more instead of going out to get one.

I'm going to go cry in a corner now until the new card comes . . .

well, check if your card is fully directX8 compliant. if it's not, there is nothing you can do but buy a new one.

Take it out, blow the dust off, and try again.

If you need to, get another game and put it on the space above the game tray to help hold the game down.

Yeah.  I can still play HL2, Episode 1, DOD, CS, etc.  I just can't play Episode 2, TF2, etc.  I guess I just need to get a new graphics card, which is impossible since I have a laptop, so I am just screwed.  It sucks but I suppose these things happen.  Thanks for the suggestions and the help.
