Apple iPod. Regardless of what people say, it is a great player and lasts about a year with frequent use. iPhone, she will be the envy of her friends. iTouch, she will be the envy of few people. iPod Classic with 80GB or 160GB. Her iPod will be filled with videos and music. If you're lucky, on www.woot.com they will throw up a cheap Zune Player. I wouldn't hold out for it.

Me mam has one and I basically have to uninstall iTunes to use my own software (plus the DRM is very invasive). Creative's used be great, they had the best OS (it's what the Dell used), but i hear they aren't as good as they used be... and iRiver have gone down the tubes it seems, but they were never good for your causal user anyway. Great if you wanted to modify it lots though. A lot will depend on how tech savvy your Daughter is, some models are to be avoided because non comp geeks can't get their heads around them. and then there is always the fashion element (this is the only reason why i would recommend an iPod to people). My Dell is a brick basically. it doesn't bother me but it would a fair few friends of mine. Another thing: anything from Sony is to be avoided. i have a few friends with them.... don't touch with a barge pole. edit: funny enough i came across a thread on the new creative zen elsewhere... they seem to be quite good. yeah, i'm a cranky 'oul fucker. deal with it.

Grumps, how much are you willing to spend on your kid? -Remember, every dollar spent on the brat is one less toward getting yourself TF2, since I never see you playing. I have a 1 Gig player from Samsung that I dumped songs into from my Windows Media Player files, like two years ago. If she's a teenager, she probably plans on using one of those online song services and changing the song titles frequently. If her friends have iPods, she will want one too. Whatever you do, get one with a ton of memory. Two Gigs would not be enough, but would give her like a solid day or two of music. And if you haven't figured it out yet, the rest of us have moved on from the technology of your day. Gone are the days of wax cylinders from your trusted Edison Phonogram. Post your price range. You should be more like Cantrip. Twitchy: "I pulled a Cantrip . . ." GivePeaceAChance: "If the Tempest had nipples, I'd pinch that shit." Xylicon: "I'm about to deliver my [Richard] in your face for posting that stupid shit. " WDF?: "He keeps reaming me... night after night... I'm rather sore." GivePeaceAChance: "OMG MY NIPS ARE HARD" llenta: "cantrip, you fail!!!" Filliam H. Muffman: "i'm on top of dick"

Wait for a good deal on a good player from Sandisk, they're decent looking, function great, and are usually really cheap.

I used to have an iPod but I ditched it and bought a new one because I depised the battery life and having to use iTunes.
It all depends on what kind of player she wants, mine right now is a Sandisk Sansa Express (2GB + expansion slot). It's a music/FM radio/voice recording only player with a direct USB 2.0 plug on it. I love it, and it's only fifty dollars.
however, if you want to explore the world of video MP3 players, I would recommend the iPod classic... but, beware of the battery life, it's never rated like it says. I just personally hate using iTunes that iPod just got me irritated.
The Sansa connect is also a pretty nifty player. It has 4GB, it's compact, has all the usual features including Wifi (internet radio and Yahoo! music browsing), and recently came with a firmware update that lets it play video, but it isnt the best quality. It's 89 bucks. {pDs} Lead Salad: bike why did you change your name Jessica343: so I can get heals {pDs} Lead Salad: oh damn good idea {pDs} Lead Salad has changed their name to {pDs} Lead Salad (is a girl) Jessica343: hahah

From one old guy to another, don't waste money on an iPod. It does the same thing as a cheaper brand only costs like 5 times as much, or something stupid.
And iPod batteries, from what I remember, are stoooopid. When they first came out, it was like this :
iPod, you could store like 10 thousand songs, even download them for a buck a piece on the net. iPod costs $129. Battery lasts a year, or two at best but costs like $199 for a new one. So it's cheaper to buy a new iPod ... except if you count the fact there are upto 10 thousand songs on it at a buck a piece (if downloaded).
Off-brand can store as many songs, but may need to buy a memory card that starts at 10 bucks. They start off in price of 20 bucks each now. Batteries are regular kind and so like 4 bucks.
Now, I dunno if it's changed much, although I do know iPods are still high dollar, but I decided to just stay away from iAnything anymore. Never liked apple much anyway.
My 15 yr old son has the knock off brand and hasn't complained yet, and he has had it over a year now.
Anyway, that's what I know about them. From one old guy to another.

Take it from me, grumps. The kids not going to care about all the features zunes (arbitrary non-ipod mp3 player) have or whatever, all she knows is she doesn't want to be the ONLY kid in school who DOESNT have a cool colored IPod du jour. Its not about practicality at that age, its about fitting in and being a part of the elite and the kids who have the cool, well known, tried and true, everyone can't say no product like the New Pink Ipod Nano, she will be all the cooler in the eyes of her peers. if she gets a zune, everyone will be like "what the hell is that thing?" and she will be forced to have to explain not only that its an ipod by another brand but why she got it but why its better that she has the zune and not the ipod. No kid wants to hear reasoning... they just want to see if you have your parents conditioned enough to be cool and get you what you really want and not ghey and get you an unknown product that isnt an ipod. KIDS DON'T CARE BOUT HOW GOOD SHIT IS. they want what their friends have and its a safe bet they all have ipods. not zunes. besides, when they get into the driving age and they hop inot someones car for a road trip THEIR music won't be heard cuz everyone else has ipods and the driver only has an ipod adapter. sorry zune guy.... maybe the headphones will be loud enough to drown out your friends who are rocking their socks off without u...
and DONT LISTEN TO BAD HORSIE! Kids know knock off brands... Its like... gee... awesome.... everyone else has the cool shit while i have the shit that came off a rack in a gas station... i wonder whom's parents love whom more... Its stupid but so are kids. they think in terms of "what do i have that other kids dont so theyll be jealous and want to be my fr=iend" a lot and although it is quite tragic, its true and you do not want to be hindering your childs social progression cuz you wanted a couple extra cases of keystone light that month. get the kid what he/she/it wants... a fucking iPod. or how about you ASK them which their favorite three are or something if you can't buy ipods cuz they were once a first generation product and had some hiccups. They facking kick arse now. I have had no issues with any ipod products since i started in with the original shuffle. since ive had the first nano and now i have the 30 gig video. it kicks ass. it takes names. it keeps my papers from blowing away. GET THE IPOD

Take the 200 bucks you were going to spend on an iPod, and buy her a knock off MP3 player and then buy her a bunch of other cool stuff for the rest of the 200 bucks -- camera, video game, she's a girl, so maybe clothes... whatever, and then on Christmas, tell her she can keep all this cool stuff, or take it all back and get the one iPod instead that does the same thing as this MP3 player minus all the other cool stuff you bought with the money you saved.
