so im using my sisters computer which is conveniantly located in my room, im goin to bed and accidently leave the power surge protector on, i wake up in the middle of the night to a very loud pop, i only assume the capacitor inside the surgre protector blew, well anyways i checked on my sis's comp everything worked fine cept for the internets. so im thinking: "ok maybe i got a bad cable or modem" so this morning i grabbed my case, spent 8 dollars on a vga to dvi adapter, and here i am surfin teh internets, is it possible something got fried on my sisters comp during the surge? Does the little light in the back of her computer light up where you connect to the internets? And if so, what color(s)? Does the surge protector still have power going through it? Go to start > control panel > system > hardware > device managers > network adapters > (something) network connection and see if it is functioning. Hit "troubleshoot" when you are there. Okay, no light at all? Like not even an steady orange or green light? The next step is to ping the LAN port. However, that would require knowing what the port address was. The tech people at ASUS had me do this when I was having problems and the problem was with the OS - that being it wasn't supported by ASUS. The other option is to avoid this problem and disable the onboard LAN and install a cheapie $5 LAN card, if you have the card slot space. I got one from Fry's for $4.99, but took it back when I resolved my problem. So, what mobo does she have? You should be more like Cantrip. Twitchy: "I pulled a Cantrip . . ." Sounds like a problem with your modem box. Lights on? Did you try to reset it?

shignog wrote:Just get a 10/100 pci lan card and put in the computer and problem solved. This is the easiest fix, but if its on-board LAN the fact that it died in an apparent power surge could mean other less obvious stuff is fucked. I'd back that machine up if there is any vital data on it. Is there anything else on-board that is broken? Like sound maybe? You may want to pop the case open and check all the capacitors on the motherboard to see if any are bulging/ruptured. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.
