so with college starting next year, I am trying to weigh out the pros and cons between my options. The first option is to be in a dorm room, which definatlely has its benefits as well as negative aspects. Another option is to get an aprtment close by and rent that.
Dorm room pros: on campus, easy access to food centers (with the college meal plan), "in the middle of things" , support/study groups (depending on the floor organization)
cons: unruly roomates, sharing rooms/bathrooms, community bathrooms, no quiet spaces
Apartment pros: its your own space, can do, with limits of course, anything you want
cons: general upkeep and jobs that goes with having your own space, commuting, being out of "the community" i guess you can call it...
So what do you guys think? have any of you gone with the dorm option and regret it? or gone with an apartment and regret it? Of course, there are many variables in what works for someone and who's around you..
Thanks for any advice.

i went the apartment route when i was in college. my older brother had a dorm room for 1 year and couldn't stand it. he couldn't study at all because its usually to loud. half the time the bathrooms were plugged up, full of puke (friday and saturday nights) and smelled really bad. roommates will rarely be on the same schedule as you, so you get to hear their alarm clock and deal with their mess. as far as the apartment, the only real downside is that you have to pay slightly higher rent and food. most major colleges have apartments on campus that might be the best of both worlds for you, so i would look into that. i didn't have to worry about the whole transportation thing because i lived less then a mile from campus and i had a bus (that was free) every 15 minutes that stopped across the street, so i was good. the major factor for most people is the money situation. i think if you have the money, you will have a much more enjoyable time in your own apartment.

Live in the dorms at least your first year. You'll make a bunch of friends and have wild times and probably get laid a lot more, and if you need to study and be alone and shit you can always go to the library or a study lounge. Razor wrote:Killing people is good therapy.

I am going to UC (University of Cincinnati) and they do not have school-affiliated apartment housing, only dorm rooms. The dorm rooms can either be double or single rooms...either way youll be sharing it with 3 other people. If youre lucky, one dorm complex has its own small living room and bathroom per room.
The main problem with apartments that i can see so far is not being able to convienently use a meal plan option. of course you can still use it, but its much more convienent if youre in the center of things.
an apartment around UC is, at the lowest, $450 (including gas, water etc) In some instances its more cheap to live on your own, but that also comes along with its own problems
and I also have to keep in mind what cheney said....being in a dorm may just be more convienent overall, socially and fundamentally.
Finances are a factor, apartments are about the same as a dorm, but say i get extra scholarship money, that will not go towards a non UC-affiliated housing unit.
Thanks for the replies

I'm in a dorm right now. Its really not that bad. Ya it can be loud when you don't want it to be, but there are always places to study. You will also likely have more stories after living in a dorm, and what is life without having good stories? It also may transition you better by not pinning as much of the responsibility on you (food, utilities, janitorial duties, etc).
