Ok so I am working on a physics degree and was thinking where I wanted to go with it. Software engineer/programming sounds like a good idea and I took a C++ class in high school and really enjoyed the work. Anyways from my research Java and C++ seems like the two core programming languages that are needed. But it seems that learning C is a priority. So  today I went to a bookstore and bougth "Programming in C" by Stephen G. Kochan. From this I plan to move to C++ and Java by reading Bruce Eckel's free online books.

What I want to know form you guys if my plan sounds solid? If you guys could give me some tips as to where to get compilers, extra help, experience or what not I would really love that.

Stay away from java, it is the cancer that is killing /b/.   Pick up C, C++, C# in that order. and I do mean pick up, as in learn very thoroughly and many apps.
I read ALL your private messages.

WDF: This shouldn't surprise you, this is me we're talking about... It'll be a test.
