Ok so the book I bought makes alot of references to the gcc compiler which is for the Linux OS. I know there are alot of C compilers out their for Windows but learning C would appear to be easier if I get the gcc compiler. Should I download Linux? Is it hard to learn or much different?

yeah check out unbuntu's site, theyve got a decently sized knowledge base.

the latest release is generally a torrent spread about to major sites, or you can ask them to ship it to you on cd (takes about 10 days or so, but it is free)

More like 6 to 10 weeks, but yes, it's free.  You can download in like 2.5 hrs if you have DSL or if you have Whut's cable service, it will take like 20 minutes.

You should be more like Cantrip.

ok  didnt know gcc runs under windows my main reason for wanting gcc is the book primarily references gcc which makes learning a tad bit easier if I use it. Ill check out cygwin since I trust ur advice.

Should I still get linux as I am trying to beef up my resume and a lot of people request linux experience

That really depends upon what / where you are applying.

I work as a computer repair technician, and based on my experience, people who have environments using Linux usually know how to maintain it on their own computers. Our office is just a Windows / Mac environment, though.

I remember when BASIC ruled the earth. Then came FORTRAN and PASCAL. I remember when it became seriously important to know hexidecimal.
