So on Monday my school is going to be selling Vista Ultimate for $10.  Hell yes.  I'm going to buy it and try and dual boot it with my existing XP install so I can use the perks of both.  The problem is I have never done this before and any help would be appreciated.

I have 2 HDDs each with 250GB, so I don't need to shrink the partition or anything of my XP install since I have a whole, blank hard drive to use.  However, what exactly do I do in order to have my XP install intact when I install vista?  Do I simply custom install a fresh copy of Vista to my blank hard disk that XP isn't on?

you will have to format and partition the other HD if it has been used, if not then you still need to partition it.

That, and expect at least a 6% performance degradation. It will be interesting to see, since you have to specify which drive you want to boot from. Once it has an OS, it will boot that. It won't look for a second or try to boot a second. Then you're going to try and run programs off the 2nd HD? Well like if you have XP booted, I don't think you can run DX10. That would be neat. Let me know how it works.

There are lots of tutorials on how to do it out there.  Just google dual boot XP and Vista.  You want to have XP on it first, then add Vista and use a tool to tweak the boot loader.  It is not hard or magical.  Just follow the directions.

Got it done quite simply, thanks for your help guys.

I do have one question though - is it possible to transfer settings, programs, and stuff between OS's so I can use them both interchangeably?  Some applications for obvious reasons don't work (they are set for XP on the other HDD), but I can access all of my files.

For instance, xfire works, others don't.  Is there a way I can import my existing programs?  Thanks.

I know some programs work for me like photoshop and some games but if it is deep rooted into the OS you will have to reinstall.

To avoid the performance loss buy having to choose wich HD to boot from  i would set up your 2 HD into a Raid 0 Stripping array, this will give u a big perfomance boost as well.. u just need to make sure to backup often for if one HD fails in a Raid 0 u will loose everything.

The slight performance boost is mitigated by the fact that you double your chances for data loss.

my performance boost was 15%, which is pretty significant.. but backin up once a week should make it just fine for him to run a raid 0, i solved this problem buy setting up xp 64 for gaming on my raid 0, then just made a raid 5 array for my normal computing and backing up[, i just simply backup my raid 0 array onto my raid 5

I don't think Windows will allow that natively, but if you put the files you want on a disc/memory stick from XP you can reboot in Vista and copy the files back in.

Well, if you truly want to boot two different sets of WIndows then I suggest using this, its a GRUB OS loader for your computer and is built right into most computers BIOS settings for you.  All you have to do is learn the techno bable and you'll be fine.  Using GRUB gets the most out of your system without hurting performance either way, the only problem is that if you truly want to share files between OS's then you'll have to either partition a portion of one of your HDD's for storage and share it between the two or get another HDD and share it between the two, just load up all the shit you want on that HDD and you'll be straight.

Again, here's the site for your info.
