Okay, so you know I went on a quest to build a new machine a while back.  The first machine was in the thread Cantrip's Mobile Gaming Computer Quest.  I was trying to make a machine that I could carry on a plane, but decided it was too big to do so.

So I started on another machine as described in the thread Cantrip's Rig #2 - Ultra Portable.  I can't get that machine to give me a video signal out of the VGA port on the mobo or out of the vid card, but the CPU and the Memory work and I will get to it this weekend.  The aim of that project is to make the smallest AXT machine that will play TF2.

So why the hell didn't I just get a laptop?  Because I can't upgrade a laptop and any that can play TF2 come with a $3500 price tag.  But if you check my stats, I have logged on 4.5 DAYS of game time since late November and I put on 10 lbs. during that time.  In other words, because of this game, I'm turning into a fat-fuck.

What to do?

Now you all know I'm a little OCD and kinda do things in extremes.  I see a problem and I work at it until it is fixed - more on that in another thread.  I reasoned that if I was playing 4.5 days, I was sitting on my ass for 4.5 days of the last couple of months.  What if I would have been moving during that time?  I could have lost weight.  What if I were to game while on a treadmill, just like watching TV on the treadmills at the gym?  I've got a treadmill that hardly gets used.  What to do?

My solution was to build my Gaming Rig #3 so I wouldn't have to move Gaming Rig #1.  Same specs as Gaming Rig #2, but I used the EVGA 8600GT 512 DDR3 for this machine and Rig #2 will instead get the DDR2 mem card.  And I decided to get a proper case which was on sale at Fry's without paying for shipping or having to wait for one from Newegg.  Tied it with a bungie cord in case of earthquakes.  Cost = friggin' less than a gaming laptop.

I took an old door hinge I found in the garage and bolted that to the wall.  Then I took a piece of scrap plywood and cut it so the center lined up with the center of the treadmill.  I then made a template out of cardboard and a pen to drill the holes for the mounting screws.  The store wanted over a Bennie for the same thing I custom built for free.  And the monitor is at perfect eye level so I don't have to hunch over.  Cost = $0.

I then took an old plank and drilled a couple of holes for some rope to tie it to the treadmill.  It rests on the treadmill grab arms.  That white wooden thing is a shoe rack that was collecting dust in the corner of the garage.  It's sitting on the plank.  The blankets are what I was using before the rack to raise the keyboard and mouse so my arms didn't hang.  It's at the perfect height now.  Cost = $0.

You can see some restraining love straps and giant anal beads hanging above the rig for when WDF? comes to visit.

So here it is:

I have to say, I am tired if I play for as little as an hour.  I can only walk at the lowest setting at like 1mph.  When I'm jumping around, I have to step off the belt because my legs try to go in the direction of the movement on the screen.  Side-stepping on a treadmill is bad and jumping doesn't work.

The treadmill will go for 99 minutes, then it shuts off and I have to hit start again.  The other day I played through two cycles plus some more time.  Like 230 minutes or around four hours. I wasn't walking for that entire time, but even standing, it burns more calories than playing sitting on my ass.  And it's much harder to eat Cheetoes off of my tee-shirt if I'm standing up.  Cost = 225+ Calories/hr.

I've already lost almost two lbs.  Or it may be because I took a giant dump before I weighed myself, not sure about that one.

You should be more like Cantrip.

and Cantrip, you can get a laptop that'll play TF2 for $600. all you need is the 8400m which is dirt cheap for what you're getting.

Excellent work Cant. However, I am disappointed you didn't go for the next best thing, which would be to rig up a stationary bike with a generator and use that to power the PC. I believe Cantrip's rig #4 - The Ultimate Energy Efficient Exercise Entertainment Device (UEEEED) is in order!

No... I challenge you to construct it!
