Half of the avi videos on my PC don't show up on my screen, I hear the audio but the video is just a black screen. It was working before my HD failed on me awhile back. Unfortunately Ive only noticed this problem recently since I tried to burn a DVD movie and all I hear is the audio again with only sound (yes this is on a DVD player.) Ive downloaded the latest divx and xvid codecs but still get squat. What could it be?

are you playing them in VLC? It sounds like a codec issue to me, generally VLC seems like it can open anything though.

Try Downloading the K-lite Mega Codec Pack Found there, note that it is a direct download link

codec packs suck, beware, only good one ive found is this:

http://www.doom9.org/
just go to download section and find: Gordian Knot Codec Pack 1.9
also they have a good collection of free encoding tools and a lot of good guides, but then again, if vlc wont play it other forces are at work

it's ok. all computer components have clearly dotted lines along which you can cut* to make smaller.

I would run antimalware scans afterwards, codec packs often have nasty shit hiding in them.

Alright I installed this pack with no success, avi still turns out with no video but audio is still present.

The only other thing I can think of would be a malformed AVI file, unless your windows is just fucked up horribly bad.
