ok, so my roommates pc went shit, won't turn on at all.  I think It's his power switch but don't have a switch to swap out, not to mention his case is fucking CRAZY and you can't get the front panel off.  I haven't tried using a screwdriver to short out the pins and turn it on that way cause that kind of freaks me out.

So should I try that?  Any other suggestions??

He'll probably give me the whole system to chop (it's gonna be my media center if he does) so I want to get this fucker working without having to search the planet for a replacement mobo(if that's what the problem is).

So come on techfags, gimme tech tips.

there is nothing to fear with shorting a jumper. I've done it hundreds of times to turn computers on, you just need to make sure you are shorting the right one and don't slip while doing it cuz nailing the motherboard with whatever you are shorting it with is probably not a good plan. I saw a dude kill a mobo once with a flat head because he got overzealous trying to reset the cmos.

LOL!

Sexy, use a ball-point pen.  One without a metal body.  The head is plastic, but the roller ball and its housing is metal.  The tip is small enough to fit between the pins up until it widens.  No mistakes with a Bic pen.

And you have to be able to get the front panel off.  It just has a screw somewhere or some tabs you're not finding.

Use the pen trick to start the power up, but don't miss or you could end up frying something.  Now what kind of system is this again?  And do you have a make and model for the mobo?  Post it here.  You can go the the manufacturer's website and get the correct jumper settings if you can't figure out which pins need to be shorted out.

If it doesn't start up, take everything out of the case - PSU, Mobo, HDs and disk drives - and place them on your table.  Pull the memory off and reseat.  Don't pull the heatsink off of the CPU unless you have thermal paste handy to reseat the heatsink.

If you plug the power supply unit in, some motherboards will have a green or red LED that lights up.  If it has one, it should be soldered onto the mobo and should be easy to spot. If it lights up, then you know you're getting power.

You may have bigger problems, so post whether the pen thing worked.  Remember, it's a momentary contact.  DO NOT LEAVE A JUMPER ACROSS THE PINS!
You should be more like Cantrip.
