I am in the position that I may have to purchase two operating systems.

I am not a fan of Microsoft and was checking into Linux.  I've done A LITTLE research on it, but was wondering if anyone here uses Linux and could explain things such as installing software such as games and stuff obviously created for Windows.

u can install a program called "wine" some have success, some not, also there is a program called "cedega" which is for installing windows platform games, i have successfully used it for steam, or there is another program from codeweavers called crossover that allows u to run windows porgrams, linux is fun, i love apt-get, makes installing super noobish, but preferrably, if u want a few less headaches, just dual boot and use your windows platform for games

See...I was trying to get away from windos all together to get rid of some of the useless shit window puts on there.

That and its a system hog.  I want to get the best performance out of my rig but then again I don't want everything to be a PITA.

As long as you have the time and patience to learn how to understand and control most aspects of the OS like you would windows, I say go for it. Just as long as you know what you're in for. Many distros are user-friendly but all of them, to certain degrees, will assume that you don't need to have your hand held when learning how to properly use the OS.

WDF: I told her that she could come over if she brought beer.
Sirus: Wait, you made the recovering alcoholic bring beer?
WDF: This shouldn't surprise you, this is me we're talking about... It'll be a test.

If windows takes a lot of of your computer then look into getting a new one or upgrading it. I have my computer i built myself and after boot up it only uses like 220mb of ram with everything running, including steam norton and a couple other things and it  only uses 220mb like i said . I do have 2 gig of ram also.
