Ok my knowledge of certain things is limited when it comes to technical parts of gaming servers, I build websites. However, I believe having a solid intro page that covers several areas and is functional will be good thing.
I think we should see what people come up with here.
Since my knowledge is limited I need to know the following:
Dimension: What sizes? File Extension: What file types?
I think if we do this right we can help bring people to other servers. So I figure use this thread for members to post ideas and creations.
I hope it can be a certain extension for the file type and I should be able to tech one up nicely.
Discussion:
What do you think it should include or have?
-----------------------
I think it should have the following: (I noticed that some of our servers have the wrong intro screen. I think Tempest 1 says Tempest 3 or something)
Simple and Clean Design List TF2 Servers, addresses, what they are about (maps or etc) Easy way to find wdfnews.com How to get a reserved slot (donations) Something to entice to join {pDs} Something to entice to be an admin (A lot of people want to admin, while there is a screening process this will draw people in)
----------------------
I want to skill this up but need to know the size and the file types it can be? Someone? Im bored.
Any thoughts on any of this? Then we could all post our creations here and figure out what would work best.

Sounds like a great idea, i can't really help with that, seeing as I suck at flash or whatever and everybody else's would look much better than mine. Quote:Razor: As hard as one might try no one will ever be able to pull one over on Super Penguin. Backpack of Win

It looks like its just a frame....
I was wondering if a html page could go there that would allow a lot of flexibility.

Is there anybody here that can tell me about the intro area?

From what I can see, the intro page is just that, a frame. Thus, it will render differently based on the players resolution. If I were you, I'd make it in 800x600. This will make it look nice for the default (i think) resolution, and will only either A) stretch or B) Create small white sapce for the 1024 / 1200 / 1600 etc. users. Also, I found this: "http://forums.srcds.com/viewtopic/6759" wrote: <frameset rows="100%,*" frameborder="NO" border="0" framespacing="0"> <frame name="main_frame" src=" http://www.mywebsite.com/"> </frameset> This doesn't tell us if CSS or Java are enabled, but if you started your own server on your own machine that could easily be determined. Or I guess this is easier... and simpler "Same damn website" wrote: In your motd.txt, only add the URL of the website. However, it appears PHP can be used "http://forums.srcds.com/viewtopic/2047" wrote: Put this in your motd:
Use php to display the correct information on a given day, that way a server restart each day isnt required to change the content.
(The above is for creating Multiple MOTD's emphasizing the 'D' utilizing PHP.) From just browsing around there it seems that PHP, CSS, etc. work so hopefully java would, and java would be useful for determining a user's resolution. Maybe. Fuck if I know. I don't know what I'm writing anymore because i got sidetracked reading around that forum. Sorry. Fuck. silverwasp wrote:Be careful what you wish for... So we need a php based landing page for our motd so it doesn't require a svr restart to refresh the page, all it takes to refresh the page is a new upload of the motd.php file and next time its requested, its new. seems simple enough.
what i was thinking to combat the resolution problem was to have a "fullscreen" flash file that would be entirely vector based so it would be able to resize without losing quality. that way everyone can get the same experience no matter what their resolution is and that would answer both of peep'ns questions. BUT, does flash work in a game? idk. I know there are applets like radio streams and whatnot that may be flash but i never investigated enough to know for sure. But if someone doesnt have flash installed, it won't be viewable anyway so maybe flash isn't the best way to go.
If anything, and we need to use only graphics and code, i'd say make a centered png sized about 640x480 with some sort of transparency transition like a feathered edge or a drop shadow or something with a gif/jpg/bmp/png based bg pattern so it looks good both in low resolution with the png taking up the whole viewable area and in high resolution with the png being smaller but blends with the bg pattern to fill the viewable area cleanly.
the 640x480 is an estimate. idk the dimensions for sure.
edit:
i didnt read the jaw's msg close enough. he said 800x600 reso. would be the best. i fig'd that was the smallest reso possible but if 1024 is the smallest, than go with 800x600. cheers

If we go PHP that gives us a good deal of customization we could add to the intro page. I think it would probably be possible to tap into the server stats and do a number of things with that, such as a "player of the day", or list the top scorers of the day, etc. I'd be for making it more dynamic, and shout-outs to individuals might make it feel a little more community-centric.
