Well, now that I am getting into my upper college classes, I was advised that it would be especially wise to get a laptop to get some notes on, and to run some basic software programs that I might need. However, I am not looking for anything top of the line at all, in fact, all I really need is suggestions for a laptop that can simply 1) run some office programs and 2) access the internet.
Does anyone know of some cheap laptops that might be able to serve for general internet browsing and efficient note taking? Seeing as I have a desktop that's decent, I don't need anything special at all. I'm moving off campus so having a laptop to be able to use on campus and to possibly kill time with between my classes (since it's pointless to go back home between 1.5 hour gaps) would be helpful. {pDs} Lead Salad: bike why did you change your name Jessica343: so I can get heals {pDs} Lead Salad: oh damn good idea {pDs} Lead Salad has changed their name to {pDs} Lead Salad (is a girl) Jessica343: hahah

Ah, thanks. Something like that would be perfect. I think the only thing that weirds me out is that they come in Linux, I think. At least that's what I heard. Does Linux word docs and everything transfer over to Windows? {pDs} Lead Salad: bike why did you change your name Jessica343: so I can get heals {pDs} Lead Salad: oh damn good idea {pDs} Lead Salad has changed their name to {pDs} Lead Salad (is a girl) Jessica343: hahah

it depends on how cheap you are willing to go....most of the time, you can really get a decent laptop for $500 nowadays with vista home premium, a decent processor and maybe a few gigs of ram if you are lucky. If you are planning to use microsoft office 2007, do not get a celeron processor or the really cheap $100-$300 laptop deals.
I dont really know much about that Eee laptop, though.

Guess you did not read the site. You can get them in XP or Linux. How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Yeah, I found it. I'm actually quite pleased because bestbuy just started selling the $400 model with XP instead of Linux (which before was only Linux), so that saves me half of the available flash space so I don't have to install XP now. Thanks for the pointer. {pDs} Lead Salad: bike why did you change your name Jessica343: so I can get heals {pDs} Lead Salad: oh damn good idea {pDs} Lead Salad has changed their name to {pDs} Lead Salad (is a girl) Jessica343: hahah

When I needed cheap mobile computing I went the other way; I got a PDA/cellphone. Does anything a typical phone would do so you could ditch what you have there and carry around only one device. Get one with the PalmOS (which I'd personally vouch for) and you'll have a good assortment of programs to start with plus the ability to download and install more. QWERTY keyboard, touch screen.. picture is pretty good these days. Plus then you can wow people with your phone rather than be embarrassed by a cheap laptop.
