The plague of my childhood has returned to haunt me. I just went to a booster draft last friday.

I lost all of the games I played and left with my friends early, but I got to see some pretty disturbing and funny things. I saw the typical fatass nerd, complete with front ass, I saw neck-bearded nerds, dental braced-nerds, and acne-ridden nerds, all giggling at stupid jokes and referring to game mechanincs and card names in affectionate shorthand. That part was funny but I saw something that really frightened me. I saw gray-haired nerds. Or, there was one, rather. Actually there were two, one with gray hair, the other without it. Anyways I saw nerds who were definitely well into or maybe even past their fourties. This is probably the worst thing anyone could see, for we, as gamers, fear turning into this.

Fortunately I do not plan on going to any more tourneys. I only just dug up my old decks and built one new one to play casually. Surprisingly it is fun to play when you're high.

Anyone play/used to play Money: The Wasting?

Being a software engineer, I am vastly familiar with these anomalies of human anatomy.
If it weren't for my friend Mauricio, I would be the only guy in there that sees the light of sun for more than just going to eat.

I'm also the only college athlete in there.  I don't even tell girls my major because i don't want to be connected with that shit.

I used to play Magic a lot.

I completed two sets of cards, and just sold them on ebay last year for a hefty $200 a piece.

I still have my kickass deck. It's a fun game, when taken in moderation.

I never got into all of the Magic videogames though, they look stupid.

i remember being heavily into magic from middle school into high school. i still have my decently large collection floating around somewhere....something like 1000 cards. still have a few decks too. a green/white monster deck, a blue/black caster deck, and a red flaming death deck. heh, if they actually make a game where you can just recreate your decks we should play sometime :P

Not sure what the chip on your shoulder is, Lead Salad, but who cares what they do or what they look like if they are happy and not hurting anybody else?

What nerd classification did you fall into there?  If there were only nerds there and you were there....?

Such technology does in fact exist though there are several programs IIRC. There's the official Wizards of the Coast one but I think you have to buy it. If you ever actually do intend to do that, though, I must warn you; the new sets blow the old ones out of the water. There's a lot of overpowered cards that can only be countered by other new overpowered cards. For instance, remember Wrath of God? Destroys all creatures, can't be regenerated. There's a new card that gets rid of creatures, lands, makes you lose life, and makes you discard. Some artifacts and creatures are "indestructible" meaning they can't be "destroyed" and they don't go to the graveyard after lethal damage. First strike was overpowered by double strike. And a whole lot of other abilities and spells that are just ridiculous. They have to keep the game fresh, though. Sigh..

I don't care what they do or what they look like, I just find it amusing seeing as I haven't run into these kinds of people since I was 14. I'm glad these people are having fun doing what they're doing but I fear for the negative connotations associated with their stereotype, not to mention the cases where they are true. Some of them are really kind, smart, amiable people who lead honest lives and treat magic as a hobby and aren't really addicted to it. Others are more socially inept and I find it hard to have fun with them but I empathize with them. The only case in which I look down upon them are the fat nerds, but really just obese people in general. I realize that some people are just built that way genetically, in fact I am a bit myself. But there's a point where people are just too obese and I find an overly sedentary and indulgent lifestyle to be disturbing.

What kind of nerd am I? Well I never said I wasn't one.. but I prefer the term "gamer" because "nerd" is a bit outdated and has negative connotations associated with it. I'd say I'm the neckbearded nerd, only I just have mutton chops. I'm sure you've seen us around, playing hacky sack on the ave, smoking weed in the park, at indie rock shows. I treat games more as a hobby than a pastime but I play very competitively.

see, its shit like that that made me leave Magic in the first place. too many new rules, too many balance changes, too many underpowered things followed by overpowered things....i miss when the game was a whole lot simpler.
