So, the Style Channel - at least I think it's the Style Channel or it could be FitTV since TiVo misdialed a channel - has an Extreme Makeover marathon.  It's the show that uses plastic surgeons, dentists, eye surgeons, fitness trainers, hair and clothing people to make-over a person's appearance.  The show's status is currently canceled, but it lives on in reruns.  I hadn't seen a show until this morning.

I have been watching for hours while working on the subject of a post later tonight.   Anyway, I saw the makeover involving a guy who spent 10 years in prison before DNA evidence exonerated him.  He was originally given the death penalty.  His name is Roy Krone, on the right:

He was dubbed the "Snaggletooth Killer" because an expert claimed that the bite marks on the victim's body matched his snaggletooth mouth.  The victim was a woman who was a waitress at a bar he frequented.  Unknown to him, the waitress had talked about to others how she was interested in going out with him.  She was found dead in the bar and he didn't have an alibi.

His attorney pictured above got a court to reexamine the DNA evidence and the poor dude was released in 2002.

Here is a pic from his bio page:

You can't really tell from that pic, but his transformation was amazing.  His three or four front teeth, upper and lower, were removed and implants installed.  Wow, what a difference.  No more reminder of the snaggleteeth that got him convicted.

Anyway, most of these shows were makeovers of people who were not really memorable, but this guy made an impression on me.

Can you imagine getting the death penalty for a crime you didn't commit just because some expert thought your teeth matched some bite marks and a jury agreed?  Then spending ten years in prison for it?  Fuck, I would loose my faith in humanity.

To have a show remove that which caused all that pain is just great television. Well, just for that story as the rest of it was formula.
You should be more like Cantrip.

I personally don't like EM that much, but EM: Home Edition makes me cry sometimes. Even though the back stories are sometimes shady, and the after stories are sometimes shady as well, the stories they depict sometimes hit far too close to home.

Yeah, HolyJaw cries. Believe it.

A while ago, I read an article about the effect that pop culture was having on the legal system. Specifically, the impact it was leaving on juries. Shows like CSI can warp a malleable mind into thinking that the most interesting solution is the right one. He was convicted based on the the dental evidence. This ignores other outstanding evidence that followed much more typical routes including fingerprints, shoe size and shoe brand. Juries want to see the blood from under the dead hooker's fingernails, and will often make decisions based on a lack of physical evidence. It's not difficult to imagine that a roaring percentage of cases lack physical evidence. It makes you wonder how many have received verdicts that they didn't deserve, guilty or innocent.
