So my bro's laptop hard drive died so he said i could have it for parts. so i took out the drive and installed ubuntu live cd to usb/flash drive, deleted all my pr0n, freed up a 80 gig external and installed ubuntu and eventually the kde enviro to the external.
now, i have a problem, everytime i start the computer i have to have the flash drive in or it won't boot up the OS via the external. The external is USB as well so shouldn't it be able to boot from it alone?

You should have the CD as the first boot device selected in BIOS. The CD should start it without any need for any HD or external device unless you loaded the startup info file on the USB drive. Select the CD as boot and report back. You should be more like Cantrip. Twitchy: "I pulled a Cantrip . . ." GivePeaceAChance: "If the Tempest had nipples, I'd pinch that shit." Xylicon: "I'm about to deliver my [Richard] in your face for posting that stupid shit. " WDF?: "He keeps reaming me... night after night... I'm rather sore." GivePeaceAChance: "OMG MY NIPS ARE HARD" llenta: "cantrip, you fail!!!" Filliam H. Muffman: "i'm on top of dick"

Ah. Not all mobos will allow you to boot from a USB device. Will BIOS give you that option? I'm assuming you got the thing to boot, you just can't do it without the USB device? You should be more like Cantrip. Twitchy: "I pulled a Cantrip . . ." GivePeaceAChance: "If the Tempest had nipples, I'd pinch that shit." yea i already booted from a usb drive and its definately enabled when i load up the comp.when i boot without the flash drive with the ubuntu live cd iso formated to it, it like searches the 80 gig external for like 2 seconds and says it can't find an os to boot. Its like the boot sector for the external is on the flash drive and it needs to be on the 80 gig. cuz the only thing the flash drive is doing is booting the 80 gig, after that it stops flickering and the external takes over.
also, i went back to gnome cuz kde's menus kept crashing....

Okay, does that mean you fixed it to your satisfaction? If not, do you have anything on that HD that you want saved? if not, I suggest using Killdisk to wipe it clean of any of the e-STDs you picked up visiting those p0rn sites. It's a free utility downloadable at the following link. The pay version will wipe a HD to DoD specifications. killdisk.comThen run a Live CD of what you want to use and install it onto the HD. Is the problem that you don't have a CD to burn? Because the Live CDs usually are foolproof. Ubuntu will send you a free Live CD if you want. Heck, I'll send you a blank CD if want so you can burn onto it. When all else fails, I usually go with Puppy Linux: puppylinux.comThis tiny OS will work on even the most crippled or ancient systems. It's what I am using right now on a system that freezes on startup because the ACPI on this bitch is fucked up. I can't even get to the point where I can use Windows on this machine no matter what I try, however, with Puppy, I can easily disable ACPI and move right along. It just works; not very manly-sounding of a OS name, but it works. At least the Live CD works - it's almost foolproof. Oh snap. They just came out with Version 4.0. You should be more like Cantrip.
