I logged on this evening, for the first time in a LONG time.....to get messaged by a couple different people to come help handle a flamer/spammer on Temp 2:

"[LPC]Rhadahr" STEAM_0:0:3523852   For those admin who would like to watch out for him, I did not witness anything beyond minor instigation, personally, however, several pDs were on at the time, and attested to his being an asshole earlier, before I got to the server.  Gave him a warning and he quieted down, hung around to see if he started anything.  He even asked for a ban, so green card to do it if he starts anything.

That said....while I talked to him about his conduct on the server....many of the members on the server were contributing to this, including two pDs members/recruits...Hence why I am posting here, and not in the admin forum.

To all regulars on our servers, all members, all recruits:

The only way to get a flamer/griefer to stop is to fucking ignore them.   A big thank you to  TripleBam for trying to calm people down and trying to make this point and to those of you who kept quiet.  To everyone else, please do your best, instead of adding to the problem on the server, contact an admin to handle the individual, or just ignore him and let him go away.

Seconded.

It's easy to egg people like this on to see if they'll pop, but it's detrimental to an admin's ability to punish them when their continued behavior is largely in response to others' comments. That said, I understand GreyWolf's reluctance to initiate any punishment (gagging was recommended elsewhere instead of a ban), but I did wince a bit when nothing was done after Rhadahr indicated no desire to respect others and asked to be banned. But Wolf was in a tough spot so I can't fault his decision.

I also wanted to apologize to anyone who heard the initial verbal beat down I gave him. I don't suffer team-bashers lightly. Give the other team shit, fine. Even complaints made out of frustration are understandable. Asking/requesting different team behavior is alright. But yelling at your team in anger; bashing them verbally. Homey don't play 'dat.

Just to clarify, the reason I did not initiate any punishment, more than a warning, despite what I heard from other members was because, while he was being an asshole, even to myself when I issued him a warning, he did stop when I asked him to.  If he had continued anything I would have removed him from the server, but aside from a single comment about our admining ability, which I chose to ignore, he did not say anything, and he also did not press the point with any member on the server.  Including the one pDs who had been egging him on, and continuing the flaming.

When I left, I asked Triplebam to message me on steam should he start anything after i left, and after checking with him a couple times, it appears that he did not do anything which warranted further action, so I let him continue to play.  If he returns to the server and causes trouble then I will have made a mistake, but I took what action I felt was needed and nothing further.

I understand your wincing Rik, but  it is difficult for an admin to meet out any punishment in which multiple individuals are involved when they did not witness the start of the argument/fight/whatever and still attempt to hold a position of neutrality.  Honestly, from what I witnessed, the pDs to which I am referring was causing as much grief as the actual problem person, which is part of what I took into consideration.  Perhaps I was too lenient, but if anyone has a problem with this, or wishes to discuss it with me, let me know.

Because this individual is a recruit, I feel that I should remind him, and the rest of pDs, that you are subject to the same rules as any other random person who plays on the server, you are not exempt from the rules, and are subject to the same punishments.

Oh I know it. I've moderated many forums in my time, some of them covering religion and politics. Ever try objectively punishing a conservative when it's known on the site that you're a liberal? Now that's a sensitive terrain. Even if they're outright breaking rules, others will come to defend them just due to political stance. I think you're a more forgiving soul than I, though. If I asked them nicely to respect other players or be banned, and they ask to be banned... they've made their position clear enough for me. Take that as you will for my next request to be an admin, myself. I won't pretend to be more merciful than I really am.

Though now that I know there's gagging, that would definitely have been the type of my hammer. But that's also based on the initial offenses as well as the behavior I saw him exhibit a few nights back, so I would have had more to go on.

Escape to the menu and I think it's an option to "Mute Players" or something in the menu. Pops up a screen where you can select who you want to mute.

My favorite option in the game. :)
