Ok so I am thinking of investing into a new gaming video card, but I have no idea where to look/start, so I was wondering what ya'll thought I should get because most of you seem quite profecient in the area of computers, while I know pretty much nothing, other than I have a monitor that attachs to my tower, and i have a keyboard and mouse!! so ya I was thinking of spending between 300-400 dollars for one, maybe low 400's (work has been good ) and anything you guys knew about would be greatly appreciated. Not sure what you need to know about my sytem but here's what I got: Processor: Intel (R) Pentium (R) 4 CPU 3.00 GHz Memory: 510 MB RAM (prob need a new stick o' RAM) Windows XP if there is any more info that ya'll need, just tell me!! thanks everyone!! I do what I want!!

Most likely you're still on an AGP platform, so I say you shouldn't even bother buying an AGP card since they're not making them anymore and they are quite expensive for the performance you get. You're better off just switching to PCI-e, a cheap path would probably to buy a cheap 805D+mobo combo, 2x512mb of cheapy DDR2, a 512mb X1800XL, and maybe a new power supply. It'll most likely end up costing more than 400 bucks, but if you find some poor sap to buy your old crap then it'll be fine Heres a link to the 512mb X1800XL if you're interested: http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=321997&ps=ho6

Buzzsaw is right, unless you have some name brand computer that you didn't build yourself. If you do then be careful, switching motherboards on most systems with an oem copy of windows (from a manufactured copy of windows) will render the system useless. So unless you have a retail copy of windows(xp I'm assuming) you may want to stick to the agp route, or get a new board, card, and copy of windows. TerribleNate wrote:Fuck nice... What kind of video card do you have now? There are still decent AGP cards on the market, they are a little more expensive though. If you are in fact AGP-only it may still be more cost effective to spend an extra $20 or so for an AGP card than go through the whole motherboard replacement thing. Well nash, answer these few questions.
1. Did you build your own computer? If not please state what kind of computer you have.
2. Do you own a RETAIL copy of windowsxp?
3. Do you like chunky or smooth peanutbutter

I would piece together this...
A pci e mobo thats compatible with your cpu.
buy another 512 stick of memory.
Get an Ati x1600 card thats pci e.
Nuke your current hardrive and put it in this machine.
That would be a decent machine for a while.
Rat hole all of your money away and put up aroun 1500 dollars then use it when vista comes out and purchase something that rocks.
I just put a machine together from newegg for almost 2000 bucks and love it, but the new amd chip makes me wanna spend another 2 grand on that sucker. If all else fails, you will have a nice rat hole to blow something else. I would not slap a new card in your machine and call it good. Temp fixes are expensive in the end, more than likely youll can your current machine and do a nice one soon.

I'm guessing he still has a S478 for his P4, so most likely it'll be hard for him to find a S478 mobo with a PCI-e slot. An X1600 is alright but a 512mb X1800XL would be a better value.

Check e-bay for an Nvidia GeForce 6800 GS or GT. They're kickass AGP cards and will only run you $250 or so.
